Preps

It is hard to believe that we are nearly five weeks into school and the Preps are absolutely flying. We have just complete our first Wednesday and we have 29 tired people (have to count the two teachers in that).

In English, we have learnt the sounds that goes with 10 letters of the alphabet and how to write the letters correctly and neatly. We have been learning about blending sounds to read a word e.g. C,A,T makes cat and building our reading stamina during independent reading. The Preps are doing a fabulous job with writing. It is amazing how many words you can spell with the letters SATPINCK. There have been lots of tap, snap, ant, cat, pink written in the class over the last few weeks.

In Maths the students have been continuing to develop their number sense by counting amounts, creating amounts and subitising (saying an amount without counting). The students also showed an understanding of shape and time.

We have recently begun the take home reading program and the kids are swapping their books a couple of times a week. These books are called decodable and this means nearly all of the words are able to be read by isolating each sound and then blending them together. The remainder of the text consists of heart words, which are words that can be learned by sight. We hope you are enjoying listening to the progress that the kids are marking and it is a pleasant time together. Please do not turn it into a battleground, if your child is too tired for reading that is fine give them a break. When we finally get a five-day week at school we will swap readers every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
