Careers Update

VCE Camp

The Year 11 VCE camp will focus on the students being able to explore and understand the different options for potential course selections moving into their final years of school. They will be visiting 5 Universities/Training organisations and the VCE Careers Expo to discover possible pathways for their career planning. The universities will be conducting detailed presentations about courses, benefits, and supports they offer. Students will also take part in campus tours and briefings about entry requirements. The VCE Careers Expo has 150 exhibitors and students can research and gain resources from the stalls. Planned activities have been scheduled for the evening so students can be social with their peers. Students will be staying in accommodation in Melbourne.  The camp promises to be a wonderful experience and was a huge success last year. Permission notices and information have been sent home to students. The due date for both the permission consent form and payment is Thursday the 28th of March.

Year 12 Career Action Plans

Our Year 12 students have been busy completing their career action plans. A career action plan is a dynamic planning document, owned and managed by the student. The creation of the plan is a process of self-reflection and goal setting. The plan helps students to:

  • consider their motivations and strengths;
  • identify their values and interests;
  • decide on their career and learning goals and pathway and;
  • clarify the actions needed to achieve these goals.

This helps them develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence they need to make informed decisions and effectively manage their career throughout life.

The careers team looks forward to reading their career action plans and meeting with students to support their future pathway planning.

Australian Defense Force (ADF)

In February the Australian Defense Force came to speak to our Year 10 students and interested Year 11 and 12 students about the vast range of careers on offer within the ADF, and to educate them on how to pursue those opportunities.

Sergeant Danielle Mayo from the Australian Army and Sergeant Heath Maltby from the Royal Australian Air Force shared their career highlights and journey. Students gained insight into the life within the ADF and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.

Advance to University (ATU) Program

Lowanna College have 3 students taking part in Federation University’s Advance to University program - Oakley, May and Makayla. The Advance to University program gives students the opportunity to study first-year university units as part of their VCE. They recently had an on-campus orientation session which included a campus tour, an information session about the program, library information and students had the opportunity to meet some lecturers that will be working with them. The study areas that students are undertaking include education, science and health. Good luck!

New Energy Technology (NET) Program

Two of our middle school students are undertaking the New Energy Technology Program which is being run by the Baw Baw LLEN. Their first day was Monday the 18th of March at the Gippsland Technical School in Morwell. The program enables participants to learn more about energy and technologies. Students will choose a challenge and will work with, and be mentored by, industry professionals to design, research, and develop an innovation with a real-world application. Theme challenges include technologies, engineering and emerging jobs. Students will gain valuable teamwork, critical thinking, and presentation skills as they work with their peers and professionals. The students are very lucky to have access to mentors from various industries in renewable energy and organisations that are currently involved in mine rehabilitation, renewable energy projects, solar energy, sustainability, climate change, waste and biodiversity in Gippsland. Good luck Jake and Gemma, we look forward to seeing your challenge prototype.
