Literacy
We are headlong into our novel study on Warhorse and the students are really gaining an understanding of the First World War through the eyes of Joey, the Warhorse. They are learning important vocabulary and grammar skills that are closely related to the book, and they are improving their writing skills also. It's been a challenging process and fairly intense learning at times, but the students have done fantastically well to date.
Numeracy
Talk about challenging.... Numeracy has been concentrated on Order of Operations. We look for groupings first, (anything in brackets and numbers to the power of) then multiplication and division and we solve them in order from left to right, then finally addition and subtraction from left to right. They have also beeen doing graphing of information and we will be moving into perimetre and area in the next couple of weeks.
Inquiry
After looking at Metacognition, (thinking about how we think) we will be looking at the different stages of life we move through from birth to old age. We will then touch on what to expect when they move into the puberty years so they are as comfortable and familiar with the changes their bodies and minds will go through in the coming years.
Well-Being
The students have settled into the school year really well on the whole and we have been reinforcing the four 'Rs' that we pride ourselves on here at Skye Primary- Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationships. We do a morning circle every morning and we discuss what we have been doing well and what to expect throughout the coming days. We talk about our expectations as a group and what we can do throughout the day to be the best students and class members that we can be. This is adopted from the Berry Street Education Model and we, as staff sharpened our skills in this department at our Professional Development Day last Friday. It helps our students foster a sense of belonging and for them to think about their learning and what they can do themselves to be the best that they can be.
Until next time, all the best from Mrs. Grant, Mr. Taberner and Mr. Keenan
