Connect: Year 3

Welcome to our second issue of Connect! We hope your children have started to settle back into the routine of school. We would like to firstly thank you for coming to our meet the teacher afternoon event. It was lovely to catch up with many of you. In this issue we have some reminders and some information about our learning. Please keep scrolling!

Home Reading: Over the past week we have been asking the children to choose books either from our collection in our classroom, in the library or from their own collection from home. We have provided a reading logs for them (and you) to keep track. It is really important that your child continues to read nightly, either independently or with you. We will continue to send further information over the coming weeks to help you all establish a routine at home!
What's happening in the classrooms?
Literacy:
We are currently reading a beautiful story called 'Rosie the Rhinoceros' which is by Jimmy Barnes. The story discusses about being confident in expressing yourself and being brave. We have used it to make connections to other texts, our own lives and other topics such as learning about the continent of Africa and other native animals. We are also deep diving on how to write narratives.
Numeracy:
The students have shown some great skill in participating in our daily reviews. These sessions involve touching on topics the students have already learned and give them a 'refresher'. We have also focused on fact families. Over the next few weeks we will look into strategies to help solve addition and subtraction problems.
Inquiry:
We have continued our immersion in our 'Someone Else's Shoes' unit. Last week we learned about Riley, a person who lives with cerebral palsy. This week the students participated in the incursion doing Wheelchair Basketball. It was a valuable experience for the students as they experienced a sport using their arms for majority of their mobility! Also, check out the video below about the cool advancements in technology which allows Riley to live a more independent life!
Wellbeing:
DOJOS! Firstly, please reach out to your teacher if you haven't been able to connect to your child's profile. This is also a free service - please disregard any prompts for payment. If you are experiencing issues with this, please contact us or the office and we can assist.
We are well and truly into giving out dojo points for all of our expected behaviours! Students are allocated a point when we observe and they demonstrate one of the ten expected behaviours. They can be earned in the yard and in the classroom. See the graphic below for how many points need to be earned to gain a certificate.
Attendance
At Skye Primary School we know that every school day counts!
When students attend school consistently, they stay engaged in learning, build strong friendships, and develop positive routines that set them up for future success.
Missing just a few days here and there may not seem like much, but over time, it adds up and can make it harder for children to keep up with their learning and feel connected to their peers. Of course, we understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable due to illness, but wherever possible, we encourage families to prioritize consistent attendance.
Thank you for working with us to support your child’s learning and wellbeing. If you need any support in ensuring regular attendance, please reach out—we’re here to help!
Scrapbooking & Twilight Sports
We would like to extend a very big thankyou to all the families who came to do some scrapbooking and get active for our twilight sports! We really enjoy the experience of getting to know you all. We look forward to more community events with your children this year!
Wheelchair Basketball
As part of the immersion phase of our inquiry unit 'In Someone's Shoes' our students participated in a special session of Wheelchair basketball. Check out some of the fun below!
