Connect: Year 2

Hello Grade 2 Families,

We had so much fun scrapbooking with those who could make it for our Meet the Teacher afternoon. Thank you for the preparation and great pics, stickers and other creative bits and bobs you brought along to make your child's notebook that little bit special! We have hit the ground running with our learning, check out what's coming up in the classroom over the next few weeks below!

Thanks,

Hailee, Dave and Emma

Attendance

At Skye Primary School we know that every school day counts! When students attend school consistently, they stay engaged in learning, build strong friendships, and develop positive routines that set them up for future success.

Missing just a few days here and there may not seem like much, but over time, it adds up and can make it harder for children to keep up with their learning and feel connected to their peers. Of course, we understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable due to illness, but wherever possible, we encourage families to prioritize consistent attendance. Thank you for working with us to support your child’s learning and wellbeing. If you need any support in ensuring regular attendance, please reach out—we’re here to help!

- 2B Families: Miss Eade is out of the classroom on Wednesdays doing her Maths Learning Specialist role. Ms Rachel Costello will be in the 2B classroom each Wednesday and works closely with the Grade 2 team.

UPCOMING LEARNING

Literacy

  • In Phonics we will be continuing to learn long vowel sounds such as 'o-e' as in best nose, 'o' as in no pony and 'oe' as in Seth's bad toe. We will then be looking at words containing 'ew' as in the wind blew and 'ui' as in fruit juice.
  • In Reading we will continue to explore rich literature in our mentor text 'The Snail and the Whale' by Julia Donaldson. We have been building background knowledge (also known as schema) around snails, sea snails, whales, whale migration and continents of the world, beached whales and the Earth's zones to give the students a deeper understanding of the text.
  • In Writing we continue to look at the different sentence types (commands, exclamations, questions and statements) along with their associated punctuation. Students will use these skills to create and publish descriptive Colour Poems (check out some examples below...)

Numeracy

  • We will continue to revise and expand students' place value knowledge by creating and drawing a range of two and three-digit numbers. Students will use their growing knowledge of digit value to compare and order these numbers.
  • Students will also continue to create questions and collect data from their classmates and graph their responses.
  • The students have enjoyed playing 'Race to 100.' Check out the video below for how to play (we have also attached a Hundred Chart file for you to download and print).

Wellbeing

  • Establishing our consistent and predictable routines.
  • Understanding our Skye PS expected behaviours.
  • Setting up our Ready to Learn scales and plans.

Inquiry

  • We will be introducing our Term 1 Topic: Growing Older & Wiser. This topic explores the concept of identity and encourages students to take responsible risks and monitor their own thinking.

A CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

Last Thursday, we decided to do a Valentine's Day craft after reading 'Under the Love Umbrella' by Davina Bell, a story about the wonder of ever-present love and a stunning celebration of the joy and comfort that is always with us, wherever we roam in the big, wild world. Check out some action shots below (we hope for these to brighten our hallways as a reminder of being kind and sharing love with those around us)!
