Connect: Year 1

Dear families,
The term is well underway, and we are so proud of how well the students have settled into Grade One. They are coming into their classroom everyday knowing their class routine and looking forward to the morning circle to share or listen to announcements from their classmates.
We are deep into new learning already having spent time practising their class expectations such as putting their hand up and waiting, keeping their work space nice and tidy, speaking to each other with polite and respectful words- why not ask them what the expectations are?
In Literacy the students are practising using ai (snail) and ay (play)and will be introduced to 'ee (tree0 and ea (seal). Look out for the sounds displayed on the classroom window. They should have given you a letter explaining the new online platform which gives them access to lots of Little Learners books so they can read at home. If you don't have a device ay home just ask for a 'real' book to be sent home.
We encourage you to make reading a nightly routine! These are books your child has already read in class, so they will feel confident and proud as they revisit them. Here are some top tips for making reading at home an enjoyable experience: Before your child starts reading, look at the speed words at the back of the book together. Encourage your child to point at the letters and say the sounds, then practice the Heart words with them. If your child comes across a tricky word, remind them to sound it out! Make sure your child’s finger is gently tracking underneath the words as they read.
Most importantly, make sure the reading experience is positive and fun! The book should feel just challenging enough—not too hard. Thank you for supporting your child’s love of reading. Together, we can make these early literacy experiences exciting and meaningful!
In maths they students been enjoying learning how to use tally marks and counting items in the classroom. A fun activity would be to ask them to count items at home such as their cuddly toys. This is fun activity to help them practise counting.
In Inquiry we were learning about the Chinese New Year and recognising that Melbourne and of course our school is wonderfully diverse. We have so much to learn about the culture and celebrations from the different countries and cultures that make up Australia.
At Skye Primary School we know that every school day counts!
When students attend school consistently, they stay engaged in learning, build strong friendships, and develop positive routines that set them up for future success.
Missing just a few days here and there may not seem like much, but over time, it adds up and can make it harder for children to keep up with their learning and feel connected to their peers. Of course, we understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable due to illness, but wherever possible, we encourage families to prioritize consistent attendance.
Thank you for working with us to support your child’s learning and wellbeing. If you need any support in ensuring regular attendance, please reach out—we’re here to help!
