Literacy
We are beginning to sound out, read and write words with our explicitly taught sounds such as "Sam," "as," "sap," and "map." Students will be introduced to our first three heart words ‘the’, ‘my’ and ‘I’. Here are the letters we have learnt so far and our future sounds.
Letters/words covered so far: | Future letters/words |
---|---|
Mm, Ss, Ff, Aa, Pp | Cc, Ii |
I, the, The, My, my |
Maths
In Mathematics, we are concentrating on Number and Place Value, with a focus on counting. Students will use concrete objects to represent numbers from 0 to 5, helping them build a strong understanding of part-part-whole relationships for these numbers. Students will be developing a stronger understanding of the vocabulary ‘more than’ and ‘equal/same as’. Additionally, students will be reading and writing numerals.
Reminders
The Victorian Government offers a free health, wellbeing, and development check for all Prep students. Families have been given information regarding the Online School Entrant Health Questionnaire. To complete the questionnaire, simply use the provided QR code to log in. Here is the link: https://students.educationapps.vic.gov.au/s/
On Monday 24th February, Sally Plant, the Primary School Nurse, is coming in to screen the children.
Attendance
At Skye Primary School we know that every school day counts!
When students attend school consistently, they stay engaged in learning, build strong friendships, and develop positive routines that set them up for future success.
Missing just a few days here and there may not seem like much, but over time, it adds up and can make it harder for children to keep up with their learning and feel connected to their peers. Of course, we understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable due to illness, but wherever possible, we encourage families to prioritize consistent attendance.
Thank you for working with us to support your child’s learning and wellbeing. If you need any support in ensuring regular attendance, please reach out—we’re here to help!
Prep Teddy Bear Picnic
Recently the children have learnt the letters ‘t’, ‘p’ and will be learning ‘b’. To reinforce these letter sounds, we are taking the children on a walk to the local park for a teddy bear picnic.
The date of the picnic is Wednesday 5th March and we will walk to Lady Emily Reserve. Please pack an extra little snack in a zip lock bag for your child to enjoy at the park. We will return to school at lunchtime to eat the rest of their lunch. Children can bring along a small teddy or soft toy on the day.
Please note: Permission has been granted if you have completed the 'Walking excursion Permission' form. Please see your classroom teacher if you prefer your child did not attend.
Satchels
Chitter Chatter Chant cards have been sent home with students who have brought in their satchels. Please remember to send satchels along everyday with your child.

Library
Please send a named bag with your child on their library day so they can bring a book home to enjoy. Students have received a red material bag from their teacher which would make a great library bag!
Library Times:
Prep A, B & C Mondays
Prep D & E Tuesdays
Shoelaces
We have noticed there are many children who come to school with laces. If they can't tie their laces, it is recommended they have velcro shoes. Here is a video to assist with learning to tie laces.

Independence
Starting formal schooling provides an excellent opportunity to encourage your children to make their own choices and operate independently within the school community. If you are finding you still need to assist your child entering the classroom we encourage you to let your child know you will be saying goodbye to them at the door. Students settle very quickly into the morning routine, however, when the class is crowded with parents it can make the start of your child’s day unsettled. We have been impressed to see so many children walking into the classroom independently.
Tips: Talk to your child the night before and have a plan eg; one hug, one goodbye and let your child know you will say goodbye at the door. Most importantly, stick to the plan. Please be assured that your child does settle quickly otherwise we would let you know.
Toileting Before School
Please remind your child to use the toilet before school so that their learning is not interrupted in the morning session.
Spare Clothes
Please ensure your child has a change of clothes, including socks, in their bag.
