Library

Welcome to the Library

I’m thrilled to introduce myself and the library to all our Essendon North Primary School families. I look forward to helping your children develop a lifelong love of reading! We have over 14,000 picture books, junior fiction, and non-fiction books in our library and another 7,000 literacy resources available to our teachers. Our inclusive collection celebrates the diversity of backgrounds and experiences in our school community, and promotes a culture where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. Our collection includes indigenous stories, bilingual picture books and dyslexia-friendly fiction texts. Our entire non-fiction collection is also aligned with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

Students visit the library with their classroom teacher for half an hour every week. Students in Foundation to Year Two may borrow two books to bring home, students in Years Three and Four may borrow three books and students in Years Five and Six may borrow four books. Books are issued for two weeks then must be returned so other students may enjoy them; there are no overdue fees, but friendly reminder notices are sent home via email regularly. It is a requirement of our school that all students bring a suitable library bag each week. Library bags help protect our books and keep them clean. Any bag from home will do; a cloth tote bag, drawstring bag, environmental bag from the supermarket etc.

Here at Essendon North Primary School, we believe that children should have access to books every day, so students may also borrow books for their ‘classroom library’. These books are issued under their teacher’s name and stay in the classroom.

The library is also open at lunchtimes to offer a quiet alternative to the busy oval and playgrounds. Students with their library bag may also borrow/return books during lunchtime.

The library has many exciting events happening during the school year. All students are encouraged to participate in the Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge which runs from March to September. In May, we participate in National Simultaneous Storytime. During Term Three we celebrate National Book Week with classroom and lunchtime activities and a dress-up day, and the library also hosts our annual Scholastic Book Fair! Information regarding these events will be sent throughout the year via Compass.

Having a sort out at home? The library gladly accepts donations of pre-loved, good quality children’s books suitable for ages 5 – 11.

Do you have library experience or a love of books? The library gladly welcomes any volunteers to help shelve books or cover our new books with contact (must a have a current Working with Children Check).

Please don’t hesitate to contact me through Compass or by email.
