CLASSROOM NEWS!

Prep/1 Class News

The last two weeks has been a busy time in the P/1 classroom. It has been so exciting to watch our 5 little Preps settling into their routines and becoming more confident with each day. Our InitiaLit program has started off with flying colours, as the Grade 1 students continue to revisit some of their learning from last year and the Prep's start learning all about words, syllables and sentences.

In Math's we have continued to focus on numbers and their value. The Grade 1's have been busy consolidating their understanding of 2-digit numbers, while the Prep's have learnt numbers 0-7 and will now consolidate their understanding of these through the book 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.

We have had some exciting new class members join us this fortnight! Our class pets - four Hermit Crabs! It has been a whole lot of excitement watching them zoom around the mat in the afternoons. We are looking forward to learning lots more about these awesome little creatures!

We were also luck enough to have a visit from George's pet Gallah 'Weetbix' on Monday, as part of George's show & tell.

What's on in 2/3?!

The past fortnight, the 2/3 class have been building resilience and independence by getting organised quickly and learning to communicate their needs and ideas clearly. It has been fantastic seeing the students managing their belongings and time (and their emotions when things get challenging!)

In Mrs Ferguson’s literacy group, we have been looking deeply into imaginative texts and writing creative stories based on our Writer’s Notebook entries about ‘My Little World’. We have also begun learning to edit independently using a checklist, to ensure our writing is at the highest standard we can reach at each individual student’s stage of learning. This week, we will be shifting our focus in literacy to informative texts, and start to get to know our spiny leaf insect, officially dubbed ‘Iggy Russel’. We will be learning all about these amazing creatures and finding out what goes into a non-fiction text.

In Maths, the 2/3s have continued their work on place value and have begun using expanded notation to take apart 2- or 3-digit numbers, using this knowledge to add two 2-digit numbers efficiently.

4/5/6 Class News

We have been working incredibly hard in the 4/5/6 classroom.

So far in Math's we have learnt about fractions (recognising, representing and making fractions, counting in fractions and finding/making equivalent fractions) and addition (solving addition with mental and written strategies). This week we are moving on the length with a main focus of being able to measure accurately with formal units and being able to convert between units of length.

In Literacy, we have been reading and discussing our class novel 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown. We have been revising word types such as nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives and conjunctions. We have also been revising the sentence structures (simple, compound and complex). We also spend one session a fortnight watching BTN and practising our notetaking skills. This week we turned the keywords from the news stories into word clouds. The 4/5/6 students are being encouraged to read at home this year. Each week if a student reads for 4 or more nights they receive a 'Work Hard' house point. Some students have consistently been SUPERSTAR readers already! Keep up the amazing work!

Cooking

Term 1 – Week 3

Term 1 cooking theme is Healthy lunchbox ideas. The reason behind this is due to hearing, far too often..."my Mum/Dad/Nan made me this sandwich, and I don't like what's in it, so I don't want to eat it."

My hope, is to ease some of that stress at home and encourage your child/children to help with making their own lunches, that way, they have agency, and hopefully, happily eat their lunch.

We were also able to use lots of wonderful fresh produce from our beautiful garden. A big thank you to Simone, for her endless work in the garden, allowing for an abundance of fresh deliciousness.

Learning Objectives for this week:

  • Students were able to participate in preparing Tzatziki dip, flatbread, zucchini slice, and carrot cake bliss balls.
  • Students were able to identify and name some common ingredients used in the dishes.
