Celebrating 170 Years of Education at Fitzroy Primary School

I was reminded the other day that this year we are celebrating 170 years of education at Fitzroy Primary School. We were the 450th school established in Victoria. The Education Act of 1872 was the first of its kind in the world and the first in the Australian colonies. Education was free and compulsory, ensuring that the whole community would benefit. All children aged 6-15 years had to attend school unless they had a reasonable excuse. Education was secular.

Since 1872, a lot has changed. However, public education remains a vital part of the Victorian community.  Victoria's oldest school, which is still in operation today, is Bacchus Marsh Primary School. It was built on the traditional Country of the Wada Wurrung people and opened in 1850 five years earlier than Fitzroy in 1855.

Capital Works Update

We received the keys to our new portables today. The plan is to have furniture and resources moved in on Monday and Tuesday, and for our Year 5/6 students to start learning in this new building from Wednesday. The other great excitement of today came with the opening of our new playground. This was funded from the proceeds of the fantastic Fete. Students thoroughly enjoyed playing on this today after almost two weeks of waiting patiently.

Foundation Information Afternoon and Picnic

Our Foundation information afternoon and picnic was well attended, and it was wonderful to engage with so many families. It provided a great opportunity for parents and guardians to meet the teachers and learn more about the exciting year ahead. The picnic atmosphere allowed for relaxed and informal conversations, helping to build a strong sense of community among our new families. We appreciate everyone who attended and made the event a success.

Commendations and Reminders

I want to commend the students on how well everyone has settled into their learning. I have thoroughly enjoyed walking through our classrooms and hearing about all the wonderful things our students are learning.

A gentle reminder: it is really important that, whenever possible, students arrive on time. We have noticed that Monday mornings seem to be a common time for students arriving late. I have included further information on the importance of attendance later in this newsletter.
