Remembrance Day Commemoration
On Tuesday, 11 November, Uraidla Primary School commemorated Remembrance Day at the Uraidla District and Soldiers Memorial.
Our Year 6 leadership team played a pivotal role in speaking and facilitating the ceremony. All students from Uraidla Primary School attended, alongside members of our local community.
This year, our students shared the story of George Edward Le Lont, a soldier who faithfully served Australia. George enlisted on 2 June 1915 at the age of 23 and travelled from Adelaide to Egypt as part of the 12th Australian Infantry Battalion.
On 5 April 1916, he arrived in Marseilles, France. Later, in July 1916, he participated in the Battle of Pozières, situated in the Somme Valley. The fighting lasted for seven weeks, during which 6,800 Australians lost their lives and 23,000 suffered casualties.
Tragically, George Edward Le Lont fell in battle on 25 July 1916 and has no known grave. He is memorialised at the Australian Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux, the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, and the Adelaide, Summertown, and Uraidla memorials.
We felt fortunate to connect with Francois Berthout and his son Arthur from France, who attended the Remembrance Ceremony at Villers-Bretonneux and lay poppies on Uraidla and community gravesites.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended the ceremony. A special acknowledgement goes to our Year 6 leaders—Maud, Sophie, Louie, Jameson, and Jessica—for their exemplary organisation and delivery of the service.
