Platypus Classroom

Literacy

What a wonderful time the Platypus class has had writing their own fairy tales based on the familiar story Sleeping Beauty. Students have been very creative and descriptive in their writing and put a pleasing amount of effort into all parts of the writing process-planning, drafting, revising, and publishing. I am certain parents will be eager to see their work on display at this Friday's assembly!

Maths

We've had a great fortnight of maths! Stage 2 has been showing steady improvement in their independent math mental skills, while Stage 3 has been challenging themselves with some fraction revision. Our brains have been buzzing!

This fortnight, we have been looking at multiplicative thinking with a focus on Area and Volume. This is a great topic for students to get hands-on with these challenging concepts.

Stage 3 students were very skilled in building a cubic metre and were stunned to find that it would take one million centimetre cubes to fill it!  They were up to the challenge of testing it, though unfortunately, our time and resources didn't permit it!

Stage 2 students were able to test their constructions. They made 3D model garden beds out of 1-centimetre grid paper. Using these models, they were able to calculate the area and layers of each container. Students then used this information to find the volume. They then tested their calculations using centimetre cubes.
