Heidelberg's Netballers Shine in Thrilling Finals Campaign

The Winter Netball season came to an exciting conclusion with both our boys' and girls' teams qualifying for the finals after finishing fourth on the ladder following a term of determined performances and steady improvement.

The boys faced a daunting semi-final against Banyule Primary School, knowing they had a big challenge ahead after suffering a 15-goal defeat in the regular season. Despite the tough opposition, the boys showed tremendous resilience, working tirelessly from the opening whistle and refusing to give up. They moved the ball with greater confidence, defended strongly, and managed to improve on their previous performance by scoring more goals. While Banyule proved too strong, winning 28-7, the boys should be incredibly proud of the progress they made throughout the season.

The girls took on Rosanna Golf Links in what turned out to be one of the most thrilling matches of the year. Having lost to the same team in the opening round of the season—largely due to one difficult quarter—the girls were determined to make amends. This time, they came out with great intensity and never let their energy drop. The qualified umpires enforced the stepping rule consistently, which took some adjusting to and resulted in several costly turnovers. At half-time, the girls trailed by five goals.

What followed was a fantastic fightback. Heidelberg dominated the third quarter, outscoring Rosanna Golf Links 6 goals to 3 to close the margin to just two goals heading into the final term. The last quarter was tense, with both teams defending brilliantly and scoring opportunities hard to come by. Our girls found the next two goals to level the scores at 9-9 with just one minute remaining. Unfortunately, a missed shot at one end allowed Rosanna Golf Links to regain possession and score before taking advantage of the ensuing centre pass to add another goal in the closing seconds, claiming an 11-9 victory.

Although the result didn't fall our way, the girls' performance was outstanding. To compete at such a high level against experienced netballers is an incredible achievement, especially considering many of our players had little to no previous netball experience before the season began.

Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic season. The commitment, improvement, sportsmanship and determination shown by every player made Heidelberg Primary School proud.

Tee Ball Team Pushes Viewbank to the Limit

Our Grade 6 Girls Tee Ball team produced one of the most spirited performances of the finals series, pushing Viewbank Primary School all the way in a thrilling semi-final.

After finishing fourth on the ladder, the girls faced the daunting task of taking on Viewbank, a team they had lost to just a week earlier by 21-6. Knowing the challenge ahead, the team used the hour before the match wisely, focusing on their warm-up, fine-tuning their tactics, and building confidence. It paid off immediately.

The girls came out firing, matching Viewbank from the very first innings. Both teams batted superbly, scoring a perfect seven runs each in an exciting opening innings. Heidelberg then took control in the second innings with some outstanding fielding and smart batting, giving themselves a four-run lead heading into the third innings.

Viewbank responded with another perfect innings, levelling the scores at the end of the third innings and forcing a fourth and final innings to decide the match. With both teams giving everything they had, it was a fantastic contest played in great spirit. Unfortunately, Viewbank got the better of the final innings, taking the match 24-21.

While the result didn't go Heidelberg's way, the girls should be incredibly proud of their effort. To turn around a heavy defeat from the previous week and come within one innings of an upset victory showed just how much they had grown as a team. Their determination, teamwork, and willingness to compete until the very last play were outstanding.

Congratulations to the team on a fantastic season and a finals performance they can all be proud of!

Girls Crowned Australian Football District Champions as Boys Make History

Our Grade 6 Australian Football teams capped off an outstanding season, with both the boys and girls earning places in the finals and proudly representing Heidelberg Primary School.

The boys finished second on the ladder after a terrific home-and-away season, with their only defeat coming against the strong Banyule Primary School outfit. Their semi-final against St Martins proved much tougher than expected. With just four minutes remaining, Heidelberg held only an eight-point lead and the game was still up for grabs. At a crucial moment, Yahye stood up to kick a brilliant goal, easing the pressure and giving the boys the breathing space they needed. From there, Heidelberg finished strongly to secure a well-earned 14-point victory and a place in the grand final.

The grand final presented the ultimate challenge against Banyule. Having lost by five goals during the regular season, the boys knew they would need to be at their very best. Banyule, with nine club footballers in their side, showed their quality early and made the most of a strong breeze, piling on goals to take a 40-point lead into half-time.

To Heidelberg's credit, the boys never stopped competing. They created several scoring opportunities in the second half but were unlucky to miss shots on goal or hit the post. As they pushed forward in search of goals, Banyule capitalised on turnovers and added another five majors to seal the match. While the result wasn't what the team had hoped for, their achievement should not be understated. They became the first Heidelberg Primary School Australian Football team in well over 15 years to bring home a district pennant, finishing as proud runners-up after a fantastic season.

The girls continued the remarkable form that saw them go through the home-and-away season undefeated. They comfortably accounted for Rosanna Golf Links in the semi-final to book their place in the grand final against Banyule.

Although Heidelberg had defeated Banyule convincingly earlier in the season, they knew this would be a very different contest, with Banyule welcoming back two of their star players. The grand final was an arm wrestle from the opening bounce, with both teams applying relentless pressure. The game was so tightly contested that it took almost ten minutes before the first score—a behind—was registered. Frequent ball-ups and fierce tackling made every possession hard-earned.

The breakthrough finally came when Heidelberg won a vital clearance, allowing Lily H to kick the opening goal of the game. The second half remained just as congested, with the breeze helping move the ball out of Heidelberg's defensive half. While the game wasn't high-scoring, the girls made every opportunity count, adding another nine points and maintaining control when it mattered most.

It wasn't the prettiest grand final, but it was a courageous and determined performance. The girls showed tremendous resilience, teamwork and composure to grind out a well-deserved victory.

Congratulations to our Grade 6 Girls on being crowned Heidelberg District Champions and qualifying for the Division Championships. Congratulations also to our boys on an outstanding season and their historic runners-up finish. Both teams represented Heidelberg Primary School with skill, determination and great sportsmanship throughout the season.

Soccer Teams Impress in Thrilling District Tournament

Our Grade 6 Soccer teams took part in a highly competitive District Round Robin, with six schools battling it out for a place at the Division Championships. With games lasting just 15 minutes, every goal, tackle and decision mattered. In such short matches, teams needed to be clinical in front of goal while defending together as a unit. These tournaments are always challenging, with many players coming together for the first time and having little opportunity to build combinations before the opening whistle.

The first match saw both teams take on Charles La Trobe Primary School on a pitch where the grass was so long it was almost impossible to pass the ball along the ground. Players quickly realised that lifting the ball was the only way to make any meaningful progress.

The boys were put under plenty of pressure and, at times, rode their luck. Despite being tested, they found the all-important goal and held firm defensively to claim a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

The girls settled into the tournament immediately, moving the ball well and creating several early chances. The Charles La Trobe goalkeeper was outstanding, denying Heidelberg on multiple occasions. With just five minutes remaining, however, a perfectly timed breakaway saw the girls finally break through as the ball slipped through the goalkeeper's hands, securing a deserved 1-0 win.

With confidence building, both teams prepared for what would prove to be their toughest matches of the day against Banyule Primary School.

The boys were first to play, and despite their best efforts, things just didn't click. The team never quite found its rhythm, and while individual moments of brilliance threatened to spark something, Banyule's organised play proved too strong. The match finished 3-0 to Banyule, leaving Heidelberg needing Banyule to lose two matches while also winning their remaining games to keep their Division hopes alive.

The girls then faced Banyule in another tightly contested encounter. Banyule's skilful dribblers continually tested Heidelberg's defence, but the girls stood tall and repelled attack after attack. The deadlock was eventually broken by a superbly struck free kick from around 15 metres out, curling around the wall and beyond the goalkeeper. It proved to be the only goal of the game as Banyule claimed a narrow 1-0 victory. Like the boys, the girls would now need results elsewhere to go their way while winning all of their remaining matches.

Both Heidelberg teams responded brilliantly.

The boys showed great resilience, defending with determination and playing some excellent team football to win their final three matches, conceding just one goal across those games. They finished the tournament with the same number of wins as Banyule. Unfortunately, the head-to-head result meant Banyule progressed to the Division Championships. While disappointed, the boys can be incredibly proud of a fantastic tournament and the way they responded after their early setback.

The girls also produced three outstanding performances to finish the day, setting up a winner-takes-all clash with Rosanna Golf Links after Banyule unexpectedly dropped two matches.

The final game had everything. With Division qualification on the line, both teams battled fiercely for every possession. Heidelberg found the breakthrough when Olivia W burst clear on a brilliant counterattack and calmly finished to give the girls a priceless 1-0 lead. From there, the team showed incredible discipline, sitting deep, defending as one and only looking to counterattack when the opportunity arose. The final three minutes were tense, with Rosanna Golf Links throwing everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Heidelberg's defence stood tall to secure a memorable 1-0 victory.

Congratulations to our girls on qualifying for the Division Championships after an outstanding display of teamwork, determination and composure. Congratulations also to our boys, who were desperately unlucky to miss out despite an excellent tournament and a tremendous effort throughout the day. Both teams represented Heidelberg Primary School with pride and outstanding sportsmanship.
