Learning, Leading and Building for the Future

 

It has been an exciting and productive time in our Hospitality department as students across Year 11 and Year 12 continue to develop their skills and prepare for real-world experiences. 

 

Our Year 11 Hospitality students are currently preparing for their upcoming work placements in Term 3. This is an important milestone in their course, providing students with the opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real industry setting. In the lead-up, students have been focusing on workplace readiness skills such as communication, teamwork, food safety, and professional presentation. We are proud of the maturity and enthusiasm they are showing as they get ready to represent our school in the hospitality industry. 

 

Meanwhile, our Year 12 Hospitality students recently demonstrated their skills and leadership by planning and preparing a special lunch in recognition of National Reconciliation Week. Students worked collaboratively to design a menu that acknowledged and celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, incorporating native ingredients and thoughtful presentation. The event was a wonderful success and highlighted not only their culinary abilities but also their respect and understanding of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage.

In addition, we are thrilled to share that our new domestic kitchen is nearing completion, This upgraded space will provide students with access to modern equipment, improved facilities, and a more inclusive learning environment. The kitchen has been designed to support practical, hands-on learning and will enhance the delivery of our Food Technology and Hospitality courses for years to come. 

 

We look forward to officially opening the new kitchen soon and continuing to provide meaningful, engaging learning experiences for all our students.

Year 11 - Design & Technology 

Year 11 Design and Technology students have had an engaging start to the year, beginning with a Rapid Prototype Design Project. This required students to identify a genuine need, generate innovative ideas, and develop a functional prototype. Through this process, students strengthened their skills in problem-solving, creativity, design thinking, and prototype development.

 

Building on these foundations, students have continued to develop their understanding of the design process through research, concept development, CAD modelling, and practical manufacturing techniques. More recently, students have commenced their Mini Major Design Project, applying the skills gained throughout the year to design and develop solutions to real-world problems.

 

The course has provided valuable preparation for Year 12 Design and Technology, encouraging students to think critically, work independently, and develop confidence in bringing their ideas to life.

 

Year 7 & 8 Technology Mandatory 

Year 7 Technology Mandatory students have successfully completed their Boomerang Bag project, where they designed and produced a reusable fabric bag while developing foundational skills in textiles and sustainable design. Throughout the project, students learned how to safely use sewing equipment, interpret patterns, measure and cut materials accurately, and apply a range of construction techniques.

 

Students explored the importance of reducing single-use plastics and considered how thoughtful design can contribute to a more sustainable future. The completed bags showcased students’ creativity, attention to detail, and growing confidence in practical problem-solving and manufacturing processes.

 

The project provided an excellent introduction to the design process and allowed students to experience the satisfaction of creating a functional product from start to finish.

 

Year 10 Design and Technology

Year 10 Design and Technology students have successfully completed their marquetry coaster project, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship, precision, and attention to detail. Students designed and constructed intricate timber veneer coasters, exploring traditional marquetry techniques to create unique patterns and detailed decorative designs.

 

To complement their coaster sets, students also designed and 3D printed custom coaster holders, integrating contemporary digital technologies with traditional manufacturing methods. This project provided valuable experience in design development, CAD modelling, laser cutting, 3D printing, and quality finishing techniques.

 

The finished products showcased students’ creativity, technical skill, and ability to combine both traditional and modern production methods to create functional and aesthetically pleasing design solutions.
