Music Department

Term 2 has been an incredibly busy and rewarding term for the Music faculty, with students participating in a wide range of performances, classroom learning experiences, and extracurricular opportunities.

One of the highlights of the term was our half-yearly Big Night Out concert, held in Week 5. This event showcased the talents and hard work of our music students across a variety of performance groups, and required a great deal of effort and extra time spent rehearsing from all of our students. We would like to congratulate all students who performed on the night and thank them for their dedication and commitment throughout the rehearsal process. A special acknowledgement must also go to our hosts and Stage and Tech Crew, whose professionalism and behind-the-scenes efforts ensured the event ran smoothly from start to finish.

Across the classroom, students have been engaged in a variety of exciting musical learning experiences. Year 7 students have been developing their practical skills through keyboard performance. Year 8 students have been strengthening their listening and analysis skills through the study of Australian rock music. Year 9 students have been exploring the music of the Baroque period, while Year 10 students have been investigating the characteristics and influential composers of the Romantic era. In Stage 6, Year 11 students have been composing their own original songs, demonstrating creativity and developing their understanding of minimalist songwriting techniques. Year 12 students have continued their preparation for the HSC and are now working towards their Trial examinations and HSC performances next term.

Our school Choir also enjoyed a fantastic excursion to In Concert, joining hundreds of students from NSW Public High Schools in a combined choir performance at the Sydney Opera House. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to collaborate with singers from across the state, experience large-scale ensemble performance, and even perform with guest singer Lucy Durack.

As we approach the end of the term, we would like to thank all students, staff, and families for their ongoing support of our Music programs. It is the dedication of students, families and community that continues to make these events successful.

Creative Arts

Visual Arts students have had a rewarding term, building their artistic skills, creativity, and critical thinking across all year groups.

Year 7 students have been exploring the fascinating world of portraiture, drawing inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the decorative artistry of Gustav Klimt. They are currently creating imaginative mixed-style portraits that combine traditional portrait techniques with decorative patterns and symbolic imagery, encouraging creative experimentation with composition, colour, and design.

Year 8 students have been developing their ceramics practice through the design and construction of vessels inspired by ancient forms. Using hand-building techniques, they are refining their craftsmanship and surface decoration skills while incorporating decoration using bold graphic elements influenced by Keith Haring. This project has encouraged patience, problem-solving, and confidence when working with clay.

Year 9 students have been immersed in a challenging drawing unit focused on graphite techniques. Through careful observation and sustained practice, they are strengthening their understanding of shading, proportion, texture, and tonal value, producing highly detailed and expressive works with conceptual intent.

Year 10 students have been investigating the theme of Art as Social Commentary, creating paintings that respond to social issues that are meaningful to them. This unit encourages students to think critically about the world around them while developing their ability to communicate ideas and personal perspectives through visual language.

Year 11 students have been expanding their understanding of contemporary art practices through a range of experimental approaches and media. They have been exploring how artists communicate ideas, developing their own artistic voice while refining technical skills and conceptual thinking in preparation for their senior studies.

Year 12 students continue to make progress as they develop their Body of Work across a variety of exciting artistic mediums. Alongside their practical work, they are undertaking in-depth Case Studies that deepen their understanding of artists, artmaking practices, and the conceptual framework, preparing them for success in their HSC Visual Arts examinations.
