Science 

Students across all Science classes have been actively engaged in practical investigations and inquiry-based learning, developing their scientific knowledge and laboratory skills.

 

Year 7 

Students have been exploring Cells and Classification, learning about the characteristics of living things and how organisms are classified. As part of their studies, students researched an Australian animal and produced a descriptive scientific report, developing both their biological knowledge and scientific communication skills.

Year 8 

Students have been investigating Plant and Body Systems, examining how living organisms function and survive. Throughout the term, students have participated in a range of dissections to model the different systems of the human body, providing valuable hands-on experiences that have deepened their understanding of anatomy and physiology.

 

 

Year 9 

Students have been studying the Diseases topic, learning about both infectious and non-infectious diseases and the microorganisms that can impact human health. As part of their practical investigations, students compared the microorganisms present on unwashed hands with those cleaned using hand sanitiser. They cultured these microbes on agar plates and identified colonies of bacteria and fungi, observing the significant differences in microbial growth between washed and unwashed hands. These investigations provided valuable insight into the importance of hygiene and the role microorganisms play in disease transmission.

 

Year 10 

Students have been investigating Genetics and Evolution, developing their understanding of DNA and its role in determining the characteristics of living organisms. Through modelling activities, students explored the structure and function of DNA and how genetic information is inherited. They also investigated the theory of evolution, examining scientific evidence that demonstrates how organisms have changed over millions of years. Students explored the significant contributions of Charles Darwin and analysed the evidence that supports the theory of evolution by natural selection.

 

Year 11 Physics 

Students have been investigating the wave model of light, exploring how light behaves and interacts with different materials. Through a series of practical investigations, students tested and verified the inverse square law, Snell's Law and the law of reflection. They have also explored how mirrors and lenses form images, using experimental evidence to support their understanding of these fundamental concepts in optics.

 

Year 11 Biology 

Students have completed an enzyme depth study, investigating how changes in substrate concentration affect enzyme activity. Students demonstrated excellent practical skills by designing experiments, collecting reliable data and analysing their results. In Week 10, students will also participate in a fieldwork excursion to Shelly Beach, where they will investigate a rock platform ecosystem. This hands-on experience will provide opportunities to develop fieldwork techniques and use specialised scientific equipment in a natural environment.

 

Year 12 Biology 

Students have been studying the Genetic Change module, with a recent focus on modern biotechnology. Through a depth study on CRISPR gene-editing technology, students have explored the exciting possibilities of genetic modification while also examining the ethical considerations surrounding its use. Their investigations have encouraged critical thinking about the scientific, social and ethical implications of advances in biotechnology.

 

Year 12 Physics 

Students have been investigating the nature of light and electromagnetic waves, exploring how scientific understanding has evolved over time. They examined the historical development of theories describing light, from the wave model to evidence supporting light behaving as both a wave and a particle. Students have also investigated the quantum model of light, considering how new scientific evidence transformed our understanding of electromagnetic radiation. Their studies concluded with an introduction to Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, examining how revolutionary ideas about space, time and the speed of light reshaped modern physics.


Mathematics 

Students across all Mathematics courses have continued to build their confidence and mathematical reasoning through a diverse range of engaging topics.

 

Year 7 

Students have been investigating angle relationships, learning to identify and apply the properties of angles formed when transversal lines intersect parallel lines. They have explored corresponding, alternate and co-interior angles and applied these relationships to solve geometric problems.

 

Year 8 

Students have consolidated their understanding of circles, revising the concepts of circumference and area while preparing for their assessment. Through a variety of problem-solving activities, students have strengthened their ability to apply these formulas in practical contexts.

 

Year 9 

Students have transitioned from the abstract world of algebra to the more visual and practical study of geometry. They have experienced their first introduction to trigonometry, using scale factors and trigonometric ratios to calculate unknown distances and angles. Towards the end of the term, students have begun investigating surface area and volume, laying the foundation for further studies in measurement.

 

Year 10 

Students have extended their trigonometry skills by exploring non-right-angled triangles and applying trigonometry to bearings. They have also investigated the surface area and volume of three-dimensional objects with curved surfaces, including cylinders and spheres, strengthening their understanding of measurement in real-world contexts.

 

Year 11 Mathematics Standard 

Students have completed a substantial assessment focused on measurement and data analysis. They explored the mathematics behind designing and interpreting surveys, using statistical techniques to analyse data and draw meaningful conclusions from real-world information.

 

Year 11 Mathematics Advanced 

Students have continued their study of functions and graphs, investigating direct and inverse proportion and developing a deeper understanding of the relationships between variables.

 

Year 11 Mathematics Extension 

Students have recently completed their unit on polynomials, extending their algebraic knowledge through more sophisticated techniques and challenging problem-solving tasks.

 

Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 

Students are approaching the final stages of their course as they prepare for trial examinations next term. This term they have explored annuities and loans using spreadsheets, modelling realistic loan repayments and investment scenarios. They have also investigated non-linear graphs using graphing software and recently begun studying the normal distribution (bell curve), examining the mathematical patterns that underpin many natural and real-world phenomena.

 

Year 12 Mathematics Advanced 

Students have completed their study of investments, annuities and loans, applying financial mathematics to practical scenarios involving interest, repayments and long-term financial planning.

 

It has been wonderful to see students across all year levels embracing challenges, developing confidence and demonstrating resilience in their learning. We congratulate all students on their hard work this term and look forward to another exciting term of discovery and achievement in Science and Mathematics.
