Support Unit

It has been a busy and rewarding Term 2 in the Support Unit, with students embracing a wide range of learning, sporting and community opportunities. Throughout the term, students have demonstrated resilience, teamwork and a willingness to challenge themselves both inside and outside the classroom.

In the classroom, students have engaged in a variety of learning experiences across all key learning areas. In English, students participated in a novel-to-film study, developing their reading, viewing and comprehension skills. Mathematics lessons focused on number and graphing skills, while Science explored different forms of energy and their role in everyday life. In Geography, students investigated Place and Livability, developing an understanding of what makes communities enjoyable and sustainable places to live. In PDHPE, students explored personal growth, healthy relationships and resilience while actively participating in a range of physical activities, including hockey, dodgeball and basketball, developing teamwork, communication and movement skills.

Students proudly represented JJ Cahill at the Schools Boccia Competition and the Support Unit Schools Basketball Tournament, displaying excellent sportsmanship and teamwork while competing against other schools. We were particularly proud to receive positive feedback from event organisers on the conduct and attitude of our students.

Our Year 7 mentoring program has continued to flourish through weekly Social Games Sessions and mentoring activities in PDHPE. These opportunities have helped students develop confidence, strengthen social connections and foster a strong sense of belonging within the Support Unit community.

Students have also been actively engaged in a range of elective subjects throughout the term. In Technology, students explored Materials and Their Properties through hands-on design projects. French students developed their confidence in using French through a variety of engaging language and cultural learning experiences. In Food Technology, students prepared a variety of delicious meals including chicken schnitzel, sushi, pizzas and chicken skewers while developing practical cooking skills. Visual Arts students explored a range of artists and artmaking practices, creating artworks using a variety of materials and techniques while expressing their own ideas and experiences. Students in Work and Community participated in the NOVA STEP (School to Employment Pathways) Program, building valuable communication, resume and workplace readiness skills. Senior students also engaged in travel training, developing independence and community participation skills while accessing local services such as the bank and post office. 

Term 2 has been full of learning, creativity and new experiences across the Support Unit. We look forward to building on this success and continuing to support our students throughout Semester 2.
