Science of Reading
If you have been following along on our 'Science of Reading' journey, you will know that we have just two pillars left to outline in the newsletter.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary is all the words that students understand and use in their conversation (oral vocabulary) and recognize in print (reading vocabulary)
There are three types of vocabulary words:
- Tier 1: These are basic words that are used by most students in everyday conversation like cat and dog.
- Tier 2: These are more complex words that students find in texts and may need direct instruction like adequate or ambiguous.
- Tier 3: These are very specific and infrequently used like numerator or hyperbole.
Building a strong vocabulary is an essential component of ensuring reading comprehension.
Most vocabulary is learned through everyday listening in conversations, reading aloud, or independent reading.
