Visual Arts
In Visual Arts, our Prep to Grade 2 students have been challenged to create a paper sculpture challenge inspired by the works of three artists. They explored The Great Wave by Hokusai, using paper to recreate the swirling and curling waves, Castle and Sun by Paul Klee, where they constructed sculptures based on geometric shapes like triangles, circles, and vibrant colours, and Joan Miró's Harlequin's Carnival, where students were inspired by the floating, whimsical shapes to create their own imaginative forms. Their sculptures are a blend of creativity and the artistic styles of these artists! Prep to 2 students have also took on a fun Monster Sponge Art Challenge! They began by sponge-painting the monster’s body, using one colour at a time and layering the sponges in a circular pattern to add dimension and texture. Once their monster’s body was complete and dry, they added details like eyes, a mouth, and horns, arranging and gluing them down to create their very own colourful monster creations!
In Visual Arts, students in Grades 3-6 have been exploring graffiti as an artform, with a focus on incorporating all of the elements of art—line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space. They have learned how to create their name or a word that holds personal meaning to them using graffiti-style lettering. Through this creative process, students are developing an understanding of how these elements come together to express ideas and emotions in a bold and dynamic way. Moving forward, students will dive into various graffiti techniques as they work towards creating their own mural-style artwork.
