Literacy- We are embarking on our Novel Study for the term where we will be studying the novel, War Horse. It's an beautiful story set among the horror of the First World War and it will give our students tremendous background knowledge about such a pivotal piece of history while following the journey of an amazing and courageous horse and the effect that he has on the people that are graced with his presence. Make sure that you ask what's been happening in the book!
We will be doing much of our reading, writing tasks, grammar activities and vocabulary study based around the novel. It's a lot of work for a term, but our students will get some much benefit from it!
Numeracy
We are starting the year in Numeracy Identifying Prime, Composite, Square and Triangular numbers and we will be brushing up on our number skills so that we will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and efficiently.
Inquiry
This is Me!
Students will explore their identity and the characteristics that make them who they are. They will consider the influence that the media, role models, and pressure from others haveon their identity. Students will learn about the changes associated with puberty and
investigate different ways to stay healthy in mind and body.
Well-Being
Next week, the staff will be doing their third Professional Development Day on the Berry Street Education Model.
"The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) equips both mainstream and specialist schools with practical, classroom-based strategies to increase the engagement of all students, including those with complex, unmet learning needs.
The education model enables schools to support students’ self-regulation, relationships and wellbeing to increase student engagement and significantly improve academic achievement."

We will be focussing on settling into our new class, forming positive relationships, taking into consideration the different characters that we share our day with and how to form positive relationships. We will also be asking the students to reflect on their day at school and how they can best get "Ready to Learn" in each session.
In finishing, it's great to be back and we have the added positive in being in the BER building all together with a beautiful space between the classroom (called 'The Patch') where we can meet as a cohort, do activities together and even have small groups working on activities.
Have a great weekend!
All the best from Ms. Grant (6A), Mr. Taberner (6B), and Mr. Keenan (5/6C)
