Connect: Year 3

Welcome to Grade Three! We are so excited to welcome you to our little community down in the BER building. We have been busy this first fortnight getting to know your children, allowing them to get to know each other and establishing routines and expectations.
The Connect newsletter will be an important place for your family as will contain important dates, updates about what is happening in the classroom and other important information. Please reach out if you have any questions.

REMINDERS:
- Headphones: If your child does not have a pair of headphones at school, we will be in touch to have some supplied.
- Satchels: Thank you to everyone returning their satchels to school, these will be used for home readers and can be used for Library sessions too!
- Drink bottles: Especially with the hot weather, a refillable drink bottle with water is so important as it is easier to take a quick sip from those rather than heading outside to the bubblers during learning time.
What's happening in the classrooms?
Literacy:
This fortnight has been all about setting routines and expectations around what our literacy sessions will look like. We have started with the text called 'Bogtrotter' which is a story about change and opening yourself to new experiences. The students have participated in art, vocabulary lessons and summarising what the story is about. The children have also been practising 'how' to pick a book that is a good fit for them. We use the acronym iPick. See the picture below!
Numeracy:
Again, this week has been setting expectations for the term. We have started with some daily reviews, determining whether a number is odd or even and also been looking at qualities of a mathematician. The students will learn that everyone is a mathematician and its important to make errors in order to grow as a learner. Next week we will move into some place value and number sense.
Inquiry:
This term we will be looking at the inquiry unit called 'Someone Else's Shoes'. This unit is all about understanding people who live everyday with a disability. We cover how we can celebrate, support and nurture people who live with a disability. This really kicks off with our incursion - Wheelchair Basketball. You can find the permission slip and payment options on the QKR app.
Wellbeing:
Finally, but no less important has been our start with Wellbeing. These first few weeks are vital in getting to know your child, how we can best support them and what they find fun and interesting! So far we have covered the four R's - Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationships. We have been looking at the 10 Skye Primary expected behaviours and you will hear about your child receiving dojos for showing these behaviours! We have begun the process of setting up the dojo points and are starting to connect families to the platform. Feel free to ask questions if you pop in for the Meet the Teacher afternoon next week!
Kitchen Garden
Check out some of the fun the students had in 3C and 3A for their first Kitchen Garden session! 3B will have their turn in the next fortnight!
Social Skills
3A spent some time playing a boardgame where they needed to ask their partners the question in the box. This was a fun way to reintroduce ourselves to each other and learn something new!
And finally, check out 3B as they explored our gorgeous Library space!
Need our emails? Here they are! Please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
