Sensory Garden update
Over the past month our Garden team, Planet savers, Grade 6 leaders and student volunteers have put in an amazing effort to achieve a massive task of planting 100 tube stock plants in our Sensory Garden area. These plants were sourced and selected from Bungalook nursery in Blackburn South which is part of the Whitehorse Garden Program an offers free native plants to schools in the area. The nursery is run by knowledgeable and passionate volunteers who offered their time and assistance to us with choosing suitable plants for our project.
This nursery is open to the public on various days of the week and one Saturday per month.
Over the past months on Wednesdays lunchtimes we have relied heavily on our students to achieve this goal before the end of the year. Our enthusiastic bunch have been busy digging,
learning how to successfully plant, spreading soil and mulch and lots of watering so our plants can become established before the hot Summer weather kicks in.
We'd like to thank all our wonderful student helpers plus Clenton, our skilled and resourceful handyman/landscaper for all his efforts, advice and hard work in assisting us with our project this year.
When we look back we have achieved so much this year, even though at times we thought not much was getting done, as we battled with long Melbourne Winter months of rain and wind and thus, outdoor activities were cancelled.
Jobs achieved in 2024 include:
- designing and painting of stepping stones/pavers
- painting recycled tyres
- installation of 2 Buddy benches (made from recycled plastic)
- relocation of 2 garden planters to opposite sandpit
- revamping concrete planters with fresh coat of paint and new designs
- planting established plants & tube stock in the tyres, planters & pots
- planting 100 tube stock native plants and grasses
- fertilising, mulching and watering
- hanging of student designed artwork and garden art pieces.
Thankyou so much to our amazing Garden Club team, Grade 6 Sustainability leaders-Claire and Isla, Planet Savers & keen student gardeners who have worked hard throughout the year, with lots of time and extra effort put into these jobs. We hope our students have all enjoyed their experiences.
Thankyou and Merry Christmas from us all! 🎄
