Year 5

During Term 4, 5N students have had a great time writing poetry. The 2 main types of poetry we have focused on are Slam poetry and nonsense rhyming like Dr Seuss. During our writing sessions, we read a range of Dr Seuss books such as Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Hop on Pop and Dr Seuss’s ABC’s.

The students then chose a book to reproduce using their own rhyming and nonsense words. Firstly, they looked at the words in the book and then changed animals, colours and made-up objects. They then started to write their own versions. Some students chose to give it a go on their own, others chose to do it with a partner and some even chose to write their own unique poems using the style of Dr Seuss.

Thirdly, students chose to share their creations with the class and requested feedback. They took this feedback on board and then typed up their final draft.

Lastly, they had to choose 3 colours (Dr Seuss style) and illustrate their books, creating their own style of illustrations. The final goal is to read our books to our buddies in prep and get their feedback. Hopefully, they love them! Below are some students showing their favourite pages in their books.
