Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport
It is hard to believe that we are in Term 4 already. The year is just flying by. Although we are on the run home for sport we still have a number of events to go, the AIC Track and Field Championships are this Thursday and Friday, we have AIC Water Polo and Touch and Esports carnivals in a few weeks’ time.
The holiday period was another busy one with 70 of our track and field athletes attending the camp at the Gold Coast Performance Centre at Runaway Bay, along with holiday training and mini meets at the University of Queensland Athletics Centre. A huge thank you to our dedicated Track and Field staff, led by our amazing head coach, Mr Robin Martin, for your commitment to the boys training and development. The level of competition for the Marist track and field team is incredible, this is a talented, dedicated group of young men and the depth is reflected in the quality of athletes who have unfortunately missed out on a position on the team. Boys who have been selected in the squad have received notification by now with instructions for the rest of the week and expectations. We are excited about the challenge ahead.
We also competed in the CBSQ basketball competition, with an eye on 2024 AIC basketball competition, on the Gold Coast. The growth and development in these boys, where we blended some current 1st V players with some emerging talent, was outstanding. It was great to see the boys improve and learn to compete at a more skilful and physical level. The boys played really well finishing runners-up in division three and will be competing in division two next year. Thank you to Mr John Lambourne and Head Coach Mr James Lidstone and Assistant Matt Richards, both Old Boys, for your support of the boys and leadership at this competition.
Joshua Pope (Cricket)
Joshua Pope (Year 8) was part of the Title-winning Moreton Magic U14s in the Century Cricket Brisbane Premier League in the holidays. His team went unbeaten through the comp - and he picked up 2 for 31 off 4 overs in yesterday's final and hit the winning runs. The match was eventually decided on DLS.
He also competed for the Strathpine 'Burras in the Queensland State 14s Indoor Cricket Titles in Burleigh the week before. Strathpine went unbeaten through their 8 games, beating the Gold Coast in the Grand Final yesterday 119 vs 118. Joshua top scored in the GF with 23, bowled well and got a key run out to help his team to the title.
Well done Joshua on a busy and productive holiday.

Marist Track and Field Camp
At the end of Term 3, 64 members of the Track and Field squad travelled to the Gold Coast Performance Centre for a 2.5-day camp. The camp was an outstanding experience for our squad and left a lasting impact on all those involved. The camp not only focused on improving and fine-tuning the student’s athletic abilities, but also emphasised the importance of teamwork and camaraderie.
A highlight of the camp was the internal practice meet, where students were challenged and encouraged to participate in different events. This meet finds one or two final competitors and adds further depth to the squad.
We extend our thanks to the students for their continued commitment to improvement and for the manner they represented the College. Their exemplary behaviour, their strong bonds, and their dedication made this camp a success.
Thank you to the numerous College staff coaches who attended the camp and also the external coaches who travelled to the Gold Coast. Under the guidance of these dedicated coaches, the students received 2.5 days of intensive training sessions. Their genuine care and deep knowledge of the sport ensured the squad received the best preparation possible.
AIC Track and Field – September Holiday Meets
Over the September holidays, the College hosted two practice meets at the University of Queensland.
These events have become an important part of the squad’s preparation and we extend our thanks to the other AIC schools for being part of the program.
It is important to note that on both occasions, Marist had over 65 students competing at each meet. This is a remarkable achievement in the middle of the school holidays and a reflection of the wonderful culture within the Track and Field program.
A big thank you to the students and the coaches who attended the meets, and continued to build momentum leading into the AIC Championship.
AIC Track and Field Championship – Good luck!!!
This Thursday and Friday the Track and Field squad compete to win a 9th successive AIC Championship. This is an extraordinary achievement and one the squad are extremely proud of maintaining.
After months of training, a three-week block of internal practice meets, a series of four AIC practice meets, and two-holiday meets, the squad is well prepared to defend its eight-year record.
Mr Rob Martin, Head Coach, has delivered another high-quality program and has been well supported by the coaches across all disciplines.
We wish Co-Captains Lee Martin and James Prole, along with Vice Captains George Daly and Joel Drew all our best as they lead the team across the two-day event.

Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field
Congratulations to Elliot Aldridge and Xavier Howard for their recent performances in the U16 Emerging Reds trials, and to William Bagnall for his efforts in the U15 Emerging Reds trials.
The trials held in the September school holidays are an important step in the pathways program and it is wonderful to see the Marist students competing at this level. The experience of competing with and against the best in your sport is invaluable, and we expect the boys will be better players for the opportunity.
