SATIS Secondary Swimming Carnival
Last Wednesday, Mount Carmel College joined 14 other independent schools from around the state at the Hobart Aquatic Centre to compete in the SATIS Swimming Carnival. Having already competed in the Southern event, the girls were now stepping up to the next level of competition. Highlights included:
With this event, the secondary school swimming season now draws to a close. Well done and thank you to everyone involved in the trials, training and carnivals. The students did a fantastic job representing the College, whether they were competing in multiple events, just one event or supporting the team as a reserve.
STCPSSA Year 6 Representative Netball
Last week the Southern Tasmanian Catholic Primary School Sports Association (STCPSSA) held their annual Webb v Doran Year 6 representative sports afternoon at St Aloysius. Two students from Mount Carmel were invited to participate.
“On the 13 September, we were very privileged to represent Mount Carmel College at the STCPSSA netball representative afternoon. We were put on the same team and we were fortunate to be able to play our favourite positions. There were four teams named WEBB and DORAN. We were chosen to play on the WEBB team that was then split into two smaller teams. We had a pretty strong team with other Hobart schools such as St Marys, Sacred Heart, Holy Rosary and Dominic. We played both our games and won. After the tournament we had a barbecue. We were really honoured to represent Mount Carmel.”

Primary Athletics
It was another fantastic year for our Kinder to Year 6 Primary Athletics Carnival last Tuesday. As we held onto the hopes of a nice 18-degree day, we were blown away with the astonishing display of sportsmanship, energetic spirits, as well as the impressive individual performances from our students. It was wonderful to see all our students participating and getting involved, whilst also encouraging their peers. This year was a tight race between the houses, but it was Carmel that took the honours with 672 points, Loreto closely in second place with 665 points, followed by Lourdes with 547 points.
Congratulations to the following event winners, as well as new record holders.

Thank you to the HPE staff who helped organise the day, as well as to the Year 9/10 Athlete Development class and parent volunteer Lauren Haremza, who gave up their day to support this event. Selected students will now compete in the JSSATIS and STCPSSA athletics carnival in early November.
Secondary Basketball
Well done to the Secondary Basketball teams for an amazing season. The competition was challenging at times; however, the girls never gave up and always left the court with a smile. Their determination and resilience grew throughout the season, and their encouragement within the team was special to watch. Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to coach and manage the teams, including Amy Bosworth, James Griffiths and Belinda Hebbink.
New teams will represent the College in the upcoming High School Basketball Championships in Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 competitions, to be played on 25/26 November.
Primary Basketball
Another well done to all the students that have been competing in the JSSATIS Basketball competition. This season we were lucky enough to enter 5 teams – two Year 3/4, Year 5, Year 5/6 and Year 6. All teams had a combination of new and experienced players, and it’s been fabulous to see the players growing in confidence as the roster progressed and combining well as a team. I hope the clear enthusiasm for basketball continues to grow. This week wraps up the end of the season for our primary’s, and we wish them luck for their final game. A big thank you to staff, parents and students who were able to coach and manage our teams, including Lisa Cranefield, Josh Nally, Vanessa Fenton, Isabella Fenton and Esther Dance, Ben and Lou Christie, Amanda Andrews and Miss Kate Harper.
Our Primary students are also turning their attention to the Primary Regional Basketball Championships on 28/29 October for Year 5/6 and 11/12 November for Year 3/4.
Secondary Hockey
“In Term 3, the Division 3 Girls hockey team hit the field with a burst of energy with a series of impressive performances. The team showcased a dynamic blend of seasoned players and newcomers, and what truly stood out was the incredible sense of camaraderie that blossomed among all team members.
While the team secured a respectable 3rd place in the season, marked by just one loss and another match ending in a draw (against the two leading teams on the ladder), the true triumph of the season was the exemplary sportsmanship and unity displayed by our players in representing the school. The collective spirit with which they played and supported each other throughout the season was nothing short of remarkable and made everyone feel welcome, ensuring great growth in all players abilities.”
Dr Heath Whiley
Thank you to Dr Heath Whiley who coached the team, as well as students who stepped in to ensure the team had enough players to compete.
Students Successes
Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to represent Tasmania in a variety of sports:
School Rugby 7's
There is a short Secondary Schools Girls Rugby 7s competition being run across three Friday nights early in Term 4. This is designed as a “taster” for rugby, and a space where new players can get involved without a full season commitment. The College will enter a team if there is enough interest.
Dates: 27 October, 3 November, 10 November
Time: 5pm
Venue: Rugby Park in Cornelian Bay
Coaching/Training: This will be organised either at lunch or after school at a time convenient to the team, so new players are comfortable with the basics of Rugby 7s.
If you are interested, please sign up ASAP via the school website or by clicking on the button below.
