Grade 5 - 6

Inquiry

Over the last two weeks of term 3, students created presentations on different natural disasters. These included Tsunamis, Volcanic eruptions,Hurricanes amongst many others. Students created dioramas, posters, 3D models and a range of other representations. Gathering information over the two weeks, students also presented written information on the effects these natural disasters have on people and places, the features of each natural disaster and historical events of when major disasters occurred. Their amazing work and hard effort was rewarded with an community wide inquiry exposition where students presented their projects to families form the wider Grayling community.

Grade 5 Camp

What a return to Grayling Primary School it was for our Grade 5s, who left for Camp Rumbug in the middle of week 1. By all accounts it was an amazing experience, with students participating in a range of activities such as, mud runs (where Mr McNay ended up falling in the mud covered from head to toe!), archery, bushwalks, giant swing, flying fox, canoeing and raft building! Many activities were focused on team building and experiencing the Australian outdoors while the food was also great, compliments to the chef! Next up in week 3, Grade 6 camp!

Lightning Prem

Week 2 of term 4, all of the students training and competitive matches at interschool sport led to the ultimate battle of attrition, the Lightning Premiership. Grade 5/6 students have been very successful over the season, especially our Basketball team and Tennis team, who went undefeated through the season. Hopes were high taking great form into the Lightning Premiership. And it showed, with many great performances over the day and lots of compliments on our students sportsmanship and positive behaviour. Continuing on with their seasonal dominance, both the basketball and tennis team went on to win first place going undefeated for the tournament. Another two flags to our trophy cabinet!

Literacy

Students have had a chance to further their writing skills by applying their knowledge of different text types and syntactical skills by writing information reports and recount in the early parts of term 4. Both of these text types provided students with a chance to write about something personal to them as the recount was of a personal experience, and the information report was a topic of their own choice. The Grade 5/6 cohort have also begun reading ‘The Bridge to Terabithia’ while also writing their own readers notebook reflections on texts of their own choosing!

Numeracy

Over the first two weeks, students have focused on decimals, fractions and percentages. Building a clear understanding of the place values of decimal numbers, the similarities between the three components, the processes needed to convert between the three have all been the major focuses during our unit. Students have engaged in open ended problems where they have had to use their conceptual understanding of decimals and fractions to develop their own personal responses to these problems. Number fluency has continued to be an important factor in our numeracy unit also, with students engaging in a range of games such as “Land grab (also known as capture array) and race to 1000!
