Grade 3 - 4

Reading

This term students in grade 3 & 4 will be using a mentor text to help develop their reading skills. Students are reading 2 pages a week and using the text and images to help support their comprehension skills. Students have been loving the conversations that have been happening and learning new words they can add to their vocabulary. The mentor text we are reading is called ‘Tea & Sugar Christmas’ by Jane Jolly & Robert Ingpen.

Maths

Students have been learning about shapes. They have been investigating the relationships between 2D and 3D shapes, identifying which nets would create each 3D shape. They have also used their knowledge of shapes to create composite shapes, as well as learning the difference between regular and irregular shapes.

Students got the chance to use this to create their own 3D shapes, showing the correct number of edges, faces and vertices.

Writing

This term the students in grade 3 & 4 have been learning all about persuasive writing. They have focused on the specific structure of a persuasive writing text, as well as the steps involved in writing one. They have done a great job of writing some compelling pieces about why our school should have a canteen!

Humanities

Within Humanities, the Grade 3/4’s have been learning about communities in Week 1. We engaged in discussions about what a community is, who can be a part of a community and what types of communities we are already a part of or could be. Students were excited when they realised how many communities they have been a part of.

In Week 2, we moved onto volunteering. We discussed what it means to volunteer and how volunteering can help communities and organisations. The 3/4’s volunteered their time to clean up our school environment, keeping it safe and tidy. One class collected five buckets worth of rubbish on a 20 minute trip around the school grounds. Students shared their emotions, many saying they felt sad that people were littering, and how they felt proud from providing their time to help keep the school clean.

Language Conventions

Students have been delving deeper into how to edit their work. They have been searching for punctuation, grammar, capital letters and contractions in small passages. They have been using this skill to take into their own writing.
