STEAM News

Foundation
Foundation students have been using programmable robots, Bee Bots and Blue Bots as part of their introduction to coding in the junior years. They have been programming the robots to travel to assorted colours, weather symbols and numbers.
Year 1 & 2
The Year 1s and 2s have continued learning all about water. Last week we discussed what ‘sinks’ and what ‘floats’ and the students were challenged to make aluminium boats which could hold as many plastic animals as they could before sinking.
This week they took part in the ‘walking water’ science experiment where they observed coloured water travel up and down a paper towel through a process called ‘capillary action’.
Year 3
Year 3s have been learning about day and night and exploring the night sky. Students have been looking at the constellations and recreated some using cotton buds.
Year 4
The Year 4s have learnt all about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and were challenged to make a rubbish collection devices out of recycled materials. Their devices had to be waterproof and able to pick up little bits of plastic which as we discovered are extremely dangerous to our sea creatures. Year 4s enjoyed testing their devices in water and picking up little rubber ducks, plastic beads, and bits of wood.
Year 5
The Year 5s have been learning about space in STEAM and in their classrooms. Recently the students created scale models of the solar system by understanding the relative sizes of the planets compared to each other and the Sun, and the distances between them.
Junior Coding Club
Junior Coding Club has been running now for two weeks, and it has been wonderful to see all the junior coders using their newly discovered skills to create outstanding projects. With the assistance of the Year 6 Multimedia team, each week the junior coders will build on their coding skills. For example, this week they learnt how to make a car travel/move along a road using Scratch Junior.
