Reconcilliation week

Reconciliation Week Activities for K-12 Students
During Reconciliation Week, K-12 students engaged in activities that allowed them to learn about and appreciate the history, cultures, and futures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Guyra Pre-School and Long Day Care students collaborated with Guyra Central School's Early Stage 1 Sloths Class to participate in Art for Reconciliation Week. Together, they created impressive Reconciliation Hands, which will contribute to a larger school artwork.
Jaearla Landsborough and Rashiah Torrens performed “Hands, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in the Kamilaroi language. Our special guests, along with the Early Stage 1/Stage 1 Sloths, enjoyed lunch together in our Infants Learning Sensory Area. It was wonderful to have Guyra Pre-School and Long Day Care Centre connect with our school and take part in our Reconciliation Week events. We eagerly anticipate nurturing this relationship for future cultural celebrations.
Aboriginal Studies
Stage 4/6 Aboriginal Studies students dedicated time in Term 1 to write and create a magazine, which they successfully produced and printed at the beginning of Term 2. The final result was outstanding, and the students intend to continue writing and publishing their work in a magazine throughout their Aboriginal Studies course.
Yarning Circle Project Update
Our ongoing school project, the ‘Yarning Circle,’ has been in development throughout the 2024/2025 academic year, with completion timed for Guyra Central School's NAIDOC week celebrations. This year's theme for Reconciliation Week, "Bridging Now to Next," aligns perfectly with our entire school initiative.
The Yarning Circle has involved extensive community consultation, providing both our Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students the chance to engage with, learn about, and appreciate the history, cultures, and future of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
