Lote

This fortnight in Indonesian, students across the school have been exploring culture, language, and traditions through stories, games, and activities. Prep students learnt about wayang kulit (shadow puppets) and met characters from traditional tales. Years 1 and 2 explored the clever mouse deer, comparing the real animal to its role in Indonesian folklore. Years 3 and 4 discovered more about the exciting sport of sepak takraw, while Years 5 and 6 continued learning about foods from different regions of Indonesia. Cooperative games and language activities have brought the learning to life across all year levels.

Performing Arts

It’s been a vibrant fortnight in Performing Arts, with students across all year levels engaging in creative and collaborative learning!

Prep to Year 2 students have been learning about the Australian National Anthem and what it means to sing together with pride. They’ve been exploring how pitch and rhythm work together through echo songs, body percussion, and simple movement activities.

Years 3 and 4 have been working on the song “We Are Australian”, learning both verses and the chorus. Students have discussed the meaning of the lyrics and what it means to belong to a diverse and inclusive nation. They’ve also begun developing movement sequences that reflect the themes of the song.

Years 5 and 6 have explored the themes within “We Are Australian” in more depth, presenting their interpretations and insights through discussion and creative expression.

Meanwhile, our Choir has been perfecting the songs we’ve learned so far this year, preparing for upcoming performances with focus and enthusiasm.

It’s been inspiring to see students expressing themselves through music and performance, while building confidence and a sense of community.

Physical Education

Years 1 & 2

Physical Education over the last fortnight has concentrated on training for the House Athletic Sports. Our Year 1 and 2 students worked on their sprinting, hurdling, and jumping techniques, and practised the overarm (javelin) throw using the vortex. We then worked on applying these skills to minor games and working together in relays.

Years 5 & 6

The upper students have also been refining their athletic skills ready for the House Athletics. I was very pleased with the way they worked together to provide feedback to each other on ways to improve their performances in sprinting, jumping, throwing, and relay events. Great work!

House Athletics

Wow! What a fantastic effort by everybody involved in the House Athletics Sports on Tuesday. We were blessed with beautiful weather and it was amazing to see a kaleidoscope of colour as our Prep to Year 6 students went busily about participating in their athletic events.

We were especially proud of the way our students gave their very best when competing. They demonstrated the values of excellence and sportsmanship when competing in their events,  and displayed kindness as they supported and cheered for their team mates. Well done Yarra Road students!

I would also like to thank our wonderful group of teachers who worked especially hard during the day and behind the scenes to enable this event to happen. A special mention to The Wandering Star Co. for supplying us with coffee and tea to keep us going!

Lastly,  I would like to mention the brilliant group of parents who volunteered their day to act as officials. They coached, timed, scored, provided encouragement, and even helped to set up and  pack up equipment. Thank you so much, without your support these days could not occur!

On Monday the 19th of May we will be having an assembly to announce the Aggregate Champion Awards and the House Points Scores. We can’t wait to find out the results!

District Cross Country

We will have a team of students travelling to Quambee Reserve in Ringwood North next Tuesday, the 20th of May. Should your child be a member of the Cross Country Team, please ensure consent and payment have been submitted. Should you know in advance that your child is unable to participate, could you also let us know.

We are also looking for two parents to assist as officials. If you are available between 9.00am and 12.00pm on the day, please contact us.
