Good Afternoon Parents Students, Staff and Friends of Derinya,
A warm welcome to all students and families for the commencement of Term 2. All classes have well established routines, expectations and relationships and are set for a great term of learning ahead.
I would like to express my heart felt gratitude for your very generous support and contribution to last term’s fair and your engagement in parent teacher interviews. As a school, we are so proud of our students, their commitment to learning and valuable contribution to our school culture and community.
Teaching and Learning
This year our junior school literacy practices continue to develop with the Little Learners Love Literacy Program. We are seeing students presenting with confidence because of the systematic approach to phonics instruction. From years 3-6 we are utilising the Phormes program to support our approach to teaching spelling. This includes phonics, morphology and etymology with students making great gains in their knowledge and skills in this area.
Facilities
This Friday our new bike shed will be delivered. This has been a much-awaited project and we are very much looking forward to seeing its construction in the coming weeks providing shelter and security for all our keen bike riders. It is hoped that this will encourage more of our students to ride to school on a regular basis.
Swimming Achievement
Congratulations to Sam L in Year 5 for achieving 3rd place in the State Finals Male 9-10 year old 50 metre butterfly competition. This is a fantastic achievement. Well done Sam!
DACE
This term our incredible DACE team do the final preparations for the Derinya Art and Craft Exhibition (DACE) to be held on Friday 25th through Sunday 27th July. For those who have never attended or are new to the school, DACE showcases stunning art work, photography, jewellery and craft. The Gala evening held on the Friday night brings our community together for a stunning evening of entertainment, food and great company. We hold a raffle and silent auction and a café across the weekend. It is an event not to be missed. Our major fundraising focus at present is to purchase a new playground for the space along Derinya Dve which will be a fabulous addition to our school.
This weekend, Derinya will be a polling station for the election. Please come along and grab a democracy sausage from our friendly volunteers. Proceeds will go towards supporting this year’s HPV team.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.
Kind Regards,
Nadine Pye on behalf of the Derinya team.
