FOUNDATION NEWS

What a busy and wonderful week it has been for us in Foundation! We began the week with enthusiastic rehearsals for our upcoming concert performance, Dance Till You Drop. We picked up the choreography brilliantly, and are very excited to share our fantastic work with you next term.

As part of our Inquiry learning, we spent the term exploring the concept of Cultural Diversity, starting with our own family stories and heritage. From there, we expanded our understanding by exploring the cultures of India, Germany, and Japan. We were fascinated to learn about the unique traditions, celebrations, foods, and clothing in these countries. After writing interesting facts about each place, we selected one country and created a detailed good copy of our sentence and accompanied this with a detailed picture.

To bring our learning to life, we also created incredible artefacts to showcase our knowledge from Play-Doh schnitzels and pretzels, origami, sushi, colourful Holi confetti, and beautifully designed saris and kurta pyjamas. We also made different signs and banners to go with all of the creations and displays. The results were impressive and a true celebration of our creativity and understanding. On the day of our Celebration of Learning, we showcased our wonderful communication skills and proudly presented everything to our 5/6 buddies and our families. We were so proud of the confidence and pride displayed!

On Friday, we enjoyed our very first excursion together at CERES in Brunswick East, where we deepened our understanding of Aboriginal culture as part of our inquiry unit, ‘What’s Our Story? What’s Your Story? What’s Their Story?’ As researchers, we participated in engaging activities, including a re-enactment of the Dreamtime story of Tiddalik the Frog, creating body art using ochre and Indigenous symbols, and exploring native plants through a taste test of bush foods like salt bush and lemon myrtle. It was a meaningful experience that connected our learning to the land and environment. We had so much fun learning together and were so excited to be learning in a new environment.

A big thank you to the parents who joined us on the excursion. Your support made the day even more special. We also thank those who volunteered but could not join us this time… We hope to have more adventures in the future for you to join us on. The students had a fantastic time and didn’t want to leave!

We look forward to the next two weeks of learning before the holidays, and thank you, as always, for your ongoing support.

Have a wonderful week!

Foundation Team,

Alycia Marsico, Leanne Wenckowski and Olivia Sargent

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

This term, we’ve had the wonderful opportunity to explore and celebrate the many cultures that make up our community! As curious inquirers, we were thrilled to welcome our families into our very own Museums of Culture.

In preparation for our Celebration of Learning, we worked in groups to investigate different aspects of a chosen culture. We developed our research skills by reading information texts, watching videos, and observing photos to make exciting new discoveries. We began by recording our findings as dot points, then turned these into complete sentences using technology, something we were very excited about!

Alongside our research, we created meaningful artwork and artefacts to represent what we had learned. Our teachers gave us time to practise being tour guides so we could confidently share our knowledge with others.

As thoughtful thinkers, we also reflected on this journey, especially on how well we collaborated and developed as researchers. Here is some of our thinking:

  • “We were collaborators by having different jobs to complete and sharing the materials.” (Grazia, Sofia, Holly & Mikayla
  • “We were researchers by reading information texts, watching videos and writing our discoveries as dot points” (Lincoln, Anthony & Sebastian

Thank you to everyone who is celebrating with us!

Upcoming dates:

  • Year 1/2 Year Level Mass - Tuesday 1st of July, 9:15am
  • 1/2VS & 1/2CW Faith Night  - Thursday 26th June, 7pm
  • Last day of Term 2 - Friday 4th July & 1pm finish

YEAR 3/4 NEWS

We are blown away by the community support towards our Celebration of Learning! We were very excited to share our learning with our family and friends.

As writers, we have been creating an informative text on a location around Australia. We researched our location to find out its location, population, size, flora and fauna, history, activities, attractions and interesting facts. We included images with captions to engage our reader in our writing.

As dancers, we have been practising our routine for our upcoming dance performance on the 7th of August. To prepare for this performance, please read the following costume options for the night.

Our theme for this is 'Safari'. Your child can wear/ have:

  • Black, brown or orange plain clothes only - no slogans
  • Black socks and black sneakers
  • Any animal print accessories (headband, scarf, scrunchie, belt etc)
  • Girls to have a slicked back ponytail, with teased hair
  • Boys to have messy styled hair

Home learning sheets will not be sent out until the beginning of Term 3. However, students are expected to continue reading and recording their reading in their diary and practicing their times tables daily. A reminder that students must know the below facts:

  • Year 3 - 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s
  • Year 4 - all facts up to 10 x 10

We have loved having our families view our work at our Celebration of Learning, and we are looking forward to welcoming you back into our spaces on Thursday, 3rd July for our learning conversations.

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

Wow, what a wonderful time we had seeing so many friendly faces at our Celebration of Learning. The children had worked tirelessly to prepare and organise the learning for the Celebration. Our Inquiry this term was “How can we learn from the perspectives of different cultural groups?”. As part of this learning, we conducted research into different cultural perspectives of events in Australia’s history, including Chinese Migration, the First Fleet, and European Migration.

Each class did a deep dive into a specific event and wrote a News Article for one side's perspective of the event. The students did a spectacular job at understanding how the perspectives of different events can differ and the cause and effect of those events.

The Year 5/6s have been busy learning a cultural dance throughout the 'Dance till you drop' program. As part of this program, we will be performing in a concert. In preparation for the concert, could you help your child organise the costume for their concert, you do not need to buy anything just what you have available at home, that is similar to the below!

Tops: White t-shirt

Bottoms: Light/Blue Denim (can be shorts or jeans - if they do not have denim, light coloured pants will suffice)

Shoes: White sneakers (if your child does not own white sneakers, any will suffice)

We will share some inspiration photos in the coming weeks.
