Year One

Our Classroom Museum Provocation!

This week in our new unit of inquiry, we explored the central idea; 'Activities and experiences change over time'. Our focus concepts are change and causation, and our curious young historians had the opportunity to become museum visitors right in their own classroom.

We transformed our learning space into a mini-museum, filled with artefacts from the past, including old toys, electronics, kitchen gadgets and games. Items included marbles, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, Walkmans, egg beaters, and money!

Students took part in a gallery walk, carefully observing each artefact, using their observation and thinking skills to answer questions such as:

  • What is this object?

  • What do you think it was used for?

  • How does it connect to things we know today?

  • Why might it have changed?

After our museum visit, we reflected together and shared our ideas and questions. Students shared their personal wonderings - big, thoughtful questions sparked by what they saw and discovered. This hands-on experience helped students to tune in and build skills in observation, reflection, and comparison, and begin discussions about how the world around them has changed and continues to change.

Keep your eyes peeled for our excursion event on Compass - we are excited to explore our unit of inquiry at Como House, with a ‘Then and Now’ experience booked for early next term!
