Library News

Hola! from the library!
It’s been a cosy few weeks in here! The library is increasingly becoming a safe, consistent space for those kids who love to read and those who just like to have a comfy, supportive spot to recharge. It warms my heart! We have had some celebrations. I have catalogued many, many new books (Spanish, graphic novels, and fiction), I have smoothed out kilometres of contact.
On Friday 16 May we celebrated IDAHOBIT day—the international day against LGBTQIA+ discrimination. We wore our rainbows to convey that Newlands stands with all kids and families and that everyone is deserving of respect regardless of their gender or sexuality. All gender-expressions and families are valued and welcome. I endeavour to have narrative picture books and fiction that represents all family dynamics and identities. I also have simple non-fiction books, and more expansive non-fiction for older students. It is important and empowering for kids to see themselves reflected in stories. It was a fun and colourful day.
Sorry Day was 26 May and 27 May to 3 June was Reconciliation week. These are special and significant dates. I have been committed to building the library’s collection of First Nations books—I think we have a really good core base which will continue to evolve. I held storytime sessions at the second recess. I read titles from our Indigenous titles. Many kids were very engaged and had some insightful commentary. These First Nations books are now housed together to encourage borrowing beyond Reconciliation and NAIDOC weeks.
A shout out must go to my library leaders Ella, June and friends who have been a great help. Thanks also to Mia who has been previewing some fiction for quality control. Thanks to Taylor, Austin, Molly, Ada, Layla, Lina, Luna, Iris, Ethen for taking initiative and being such good champions of the library. Thank you to Marisa and Andrew for your generous donations. Thanks to Nam for the printer.
Book club issue 4 is out and closes midnight Friday 20 June. My pick is Jessica Townsend’s new instalment in the Nevermoor series, Silverborn: the Mystery of Morrigan Crow.
I have placed a book tub in the office for quick and easy library-book returns if the library is locked.
For those of you who might be curious you can visit the library catalogue online here.
Also our wonderful Jess D is back from maternity leave! So to lessen the confusion I am now known as Jess P.
