Year Three
Spotlight on Learning
Ephesus Community
Dear families,
This week in our learning, we joyfully celebrated St Thomas Day, honouring the life and faith of our patron saint. Students explored the story of St Thomas and reflected on his courage, curiosity, and belief. We gathered together for a beautiful prayer service and took time to think about how we can live with faith in our own lives. We also enjoyed a cosy and fun PJ Day, bringing some end-of-term cheer to the classroom! Students loved wearing their pyjamas and contributing to the donations to St Vincent de Paul.
Religion Education
In Religious Education this week, Year 3 students reflected on their learning journey by writing prayers of thanksgiving. They were encouraged to express what they are grateful for, make connections to their learning about Jesus, and consider how they will carry hope into the next part of their journey.
Maths
In Mathematics, Year 3 students have been exploring multiplication and division through real-world problem-solving. They have been learning to use the CUBES strategy to understand and represent worded problems, write clear number sentences, and select appropriate strategies to solve them. To help visualise division situations, students have been using bar models and practising how to explain their thinking clearly.
English
In English, Year 3 students have been learning all about poetry. They explored different types of rhyme structures and practised identifying patterns in poems. Students worked on generating their own rhyming words, which helped them build confidence and creativity with language. Using these skills, they planned, wrote, edited, and published their very own poems. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to express their ideas in playful and meaningful ways while developing important writing and editing skills.
Integrated Studies
In Integrated Studies, Year 3 students have been learning about NAIDOC Week and why it is an important time of celebration and reflection in Australia. They discovered that NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee and explored the significance of the week in recognising and honouring the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Students also discussed the different ways NAIDOC Week is celebrated across the country, including through art, music, storytelling, and community events. This learning helped build awareness, understanding, and respect for the world’s oldest living cultures.
AUSLAN
In Auslan this week, Year 3 students have been learning how to use pointing signs to refer to people and objects in the room. Just like we use words such as “this,” “that,” or “he” in English instead of repeating names, students practised using non-verbal pointing to clearly show who or what they were talking about. This skill is an important part of Auslan grammar and helps make signing more fluent and natural. Students enjoyed interactive games and activities to practise this skill in a fun and meaningful way.
Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR
In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Year 3 students have been developing important skills to help them understand themselves and relate positively to others. Through class discussions, role-plays, and reflection activities, students explored how to recognise and manage their emotions, show empathy, and make respectful choices in their relationships. These skills support students not only in the classroom but also in their friendships and everyday interactions, helping to build a strong, caring, and inclusive learning community.
