Year Two

Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

It might have felt like a long Term 2 but the students started and finished the week with great stamina for their learning! On Monday we celebrated Pyjama Day and students thoroughly enjoyed undertaking their learning in their PJs! Thank you to all the students who contributed a gold coin as this will definitely help St Vincent de Paul feed and clothe people during the Winter season.

On Thursday and Friday we celebrated St Thomas' Day with a liturgy on Thursday and a pilgrimage on Friday. Whilst we learnt many different facts about St Thomas and how we can use his message in our lives today, the teachers feel their favourite part was making their passports and getting them stamped!

We also had an awesome time singing songs with Drew Lane, a singer and musician, who co-created the song, Pilgrims of Hope.

We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break and we look forward to see everyone in Term 3.

First week of Term Three we are learning about...

Religious Education: We will be revisiting the Creation story through our senses and also making the connection of creation through the Parable of the Sower.

Mathematics: the topic of Multiplicative thinking will be our focus for the next four weeks but the students will specifically be reviewing doubling and halving and repeated addition in the first week.

English: students will unpack different language features using the picture book, 'God's Brilliantly Big Creation Story'. We will focus on the if, when, before and after conjunctions within our writing and look at how we can write texts that persuade people about our opinions. For our decoding and spelling patterns we will learn about Open Syllables, of which, when a syllable ends in a vowel, it is an OPEN syllable. Vowels at the end of a syllable say their LONG sounds.

Auslan: students will be learning how an Auslan story creates a picture in the air. They will also learn or review the following individual signs:

Integrated Studies: students will learn about the stages of development for humans such as baby, toddler, child, teenager and adult.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR: we commence our Gender Relations unit where students will look at gender norms and stereotypes. The students will complete a pre-assessment about their initial thinking on this unit.
