Year One

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

We made it! Thank you to all the families who attended Parent Teacher Interviews last night. If you were unable to make it, please reach out to your child's class teacher and we will be happy to accommodate a time for chat in term 3. It's been such a busy week with Pyjama day, interviews and St. Thomas day celebrations across two days. Our students are very much in need of a good break from all things school. Here are some highlights from the past week.

Religious Education Focus:  This week we concluded our Inquiry related topic that also connected to Religion. Students have made a reflection flip book about St. Thomas and these have come home with them along with their Inquiry Diorama based on 'How does the past shape who we are'.

English focus:. This week we have revised all the sounds from Term 2.  The following dictation sentences can give you an idea about all the sounds we are working on for Reading and Spelling. Note: we have not learnt stage 7.3 sounds yet.

Mathematics focus: This week we learnt about time as a measurement tool. During our assessment we found that our students require a bit more work on two-digit numbers. This is a simple activity you can do at home and extend it by asking students to make 2 and 3 digit numbers. Once they have 3 two digit numbers, get them to order the numbers from smallest to largest or reverse. Then place the numbers on a 0-100 number line

SEL: We are summarising the Moana story during writing and looking at the  important parts/message of the story.

History:  We are summarising the book 'My Place' and what we have learned about the history of Australia.

AUSLAN: We are reviewing the AUSLAN alphabet and numbers 1-20 using sign language.

Next term week we are learning about...

Religious Education and Inquiry focus: The overarching inquiry statement for semester two is 'Fuel for the journey'. Through Religion and Inquiry we will examine how we grow and change in our bodies, our brain and relationships with each other.

In preparation for our unit, can we please ask families to provide a baby photo for each student in term 3. You can e-mail or send a printed copy to their own classroom teacher.

English focus: Next term we will read a non-fiction book during week 1 and learn about the text features of a non-fiction book such as what a table of contents, headings, labels, glossary are and how we can extract factual information from a non-fiction book.

Mathematics focus: At the beginning of term 3 we will start learning about sharing and regrouping of numbers.

SEL: Next term during SEL we will cover the topics. For grade 1 level, we will talk about how boys and girls can be good at everything and how we are not limited by gender when it comes to trying out new things like using play equipment, sport, art and dance.

AUSLAN Focus: Students will commence learning unit 5.

Ways to engage with the newsletter:

  • Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.

  • Ask your child to 'retell' the story using their own words.

  • Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.

  • Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.

  • Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.

  • If your child has more than 1 take home reader at home, please return the extra books to us. We need to make sure that every child has access to books at their reading level.

    Reminders

  • Please ensure students have a jumper or sports jackets for outside play for term 3.

  • If your child is unwell and finds it difficult to concentrate at school, perhaps a rest day is needed.

  • Comprehension questions to ask based on the take home reader:
    "Point to where it shows...."
    “I wonder why…”
    "what makes you think...."
    “This reminds me of…”
    "Show me where it says"
“I didn’t understand that part, so I’ll reread it.”
Use a mix of Who, What, When, Where, Why, How questions based on the book.
