Year 5

Kate Yates (Team Leader), Sally Dyett, Kerryn McConachy, Damon Webb, Chris Bird

Gemma Billingham, Rachael Fletcher and Georgia Murphy

We are just about to hit the end of our busy ‘warm up’ period, getting ready for our 2025 Market Day, run by the amazing Year 5 students! Parents can we ask that you to please check in with your child to ensure play dates have been organised to make their products, leaving enough time to sell them on Wednesday 25th June?

In the Classroom:

Writing:

This week, students have been focusing on exploring the different parts of speech and sentence fluency to make their writing more interesting.

Audrey from 5SD’S BEFORE piece …

The bears struggled to keep their stance as the rushing river tried to sweep them away. The bears themselves were a dark shade of brown, their huge paws, laden with claws swiped blindly at the grey, white salmon who were jumping out of the water and back in almost like they were teasing the bears. The round baby grizzly’s’ ears perked up at the sound of seagulls chirping but then averted his eyes back to the bigger bears, hoping they would catch something for their supper.

And their AFTER piece …

Struggling to keep their stance the bears were nearly swept away. The two large bears were a dark shade of honey brown; their matted fur danced in the wind. Their huge brown paws laden with claws, swiped blindly at the grey, white salmon who were jumping out of the water and back almost like they were teasing the bears. After another failed attempt to catch some fish, the round baby grizzly’s ears perked up at the sound of seagulls chirping. Splash! The cub averted his eyes back to the bigger bears once more, hoping they would catch something for their supper.

Wow! What an improvement Audrey!

Maths

Students have been doing lots of hands-on activities, exploring decimals. Here students in 5KM were using ‘decimats’ to understand numbers to 3 decimal places. Parents – this is an easy game to play at home! Why don't you Google it?

Homework

Year 5 students have amended homework expectations, due to the extra work needed for their Market Day preparation. Please check in with them about what is required.

Term 3 Camp

Preparations are already well underway for our camp at Sovereign Hill next term. Please keep an eye out on Compass, as camp payments will be due soon. Information regarding clothing required on the camp will be sent your way in the next couple of weeks, as camp will be in Week 3 and some parents may want to purchase items during the upcoming school holidays. Stay tuned!
