Dear Families
Our Year 11 Pilgrims embark on their Pilgrimage to Cape York Peninsula on Sunday. Students have been working with Mrs Janeen Murphy, Deputy Principal, Faith and Mission, over the past year in preparation for this life-changing experience. Inspired by our motto, Seek Justice, the Pilgrimage experience requires students to experience a totally different way of living, discern transformative moments and engage in deep reflection. The timing of the Pilgrimage coincides with the Year 11 Id Quod Volo leadership program based on the model of servant leadership. Placing them out of their comfort zone, this Pilgrimage will provide students with the invaluable experience of learning from and giving service to others far removed from their lived experience.
As the final phase of their pre-Pilgrimage formation, staff and students were blessed at a moving Commissioning Mass last night. Our best wishes to all students and staff - Luke Bostelman, Jessica Pillera, Erin Basile and Xavier Mitchell - for their incredible journey ahead. We hope that students will have their hearts and minds opened to new encounters experienced with the Cape York communities they will work alongside. May they reflect the abundance of God in all their work and be kept safe and well throughout their Pilgrimage journey.
Years 7 and 8 Magis Personal Projects
Congratulations to students involved in the Years 7 and 8 Magis Personal Projects this week for their informative and well-presented displays. A result of their hard work and dedication to build their knowledge on a topic of interest, it was wonderful to see their passion and learning on display!
Lost Property
As the term draws to a close, students are reminded to check for any personal items they may have misplaced throughout the term. The Lost Property collection outside Student Services includes a range of uniform items, files, drink bottles, and lunch boxes waiting to be collected by their rightful owners.
John XXIII Day - Friday, 8 August
One of the most significant days on the College calendar, John XXIII Day is a community day where students celebrate our founders and heritage, and raise funds to support our College partners, Jesuit Mission Australia and Mary Ward International. This year we are excited to announce that over 20 staff and Year 12 Student Representative Councillors are prepared to take the plunge into an ice bath to raise money for Jesuit Mission Australia. Jesuit Mission works in more than 10 countries across Asia and Africa to uphold the innate dignity of people living with the effects of poverty, especially the most marginalised and vulnerable. Every $200 raised will see a staff member and Year 12 SRC take the plunge. As an additional challenge to promote much-needed funds for Jesuit Mission’s work, I will take the plunge if $5,000 is raised, and Mr Mahon will do so for $10,000.
Donations are tax-deductible and can be made directly to Jesuit Mission Australia using the link below. Let’s come together to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves.

College Celebration of NAIDOC
NAIDOC Week falls during the first week of the school holidays. This year’s theme is 'The next generation: Strength, Vision, Legacy.' As we look ahead to this week, Mr Matthew McGuire, friend of the College and Noongar Traditional Owner, will give Secondary students and staff a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.
A Smoking Ceremony is a traditional Noongar ritual used not only to cleanse and purify a specific area, but also to cleanse the spirit, body, and soul while on Noongar Country. This ritual of purification and unity – signifies the beginning of something new.
This event will take place on the Chapel Lawn next Tuesday, 1 July from 8:30am and Secondary students will participate during Homeroom.
Important health notice regarding the Smoking Ceremony on Tuesday, 1 July
If a Secondary student suffers from asthma and their asthma is triggered by smoke, they will be able to attend the Library, where there will be teacher supervision, during Homeroom on this day.
Students with asthma should also make sure they have their reliever medication with them.

Facciamo la pizza!
This term, our Year 9 Italian students learned about the different mealtimes and meals eaten in Italy. This included learning vocabulary and verbs associated with eating and drinking, as well as exploring typical Italian breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Understanding the Italian social concept of the ‘bar’ and its connection to sharing a snack or light lunch was also explored. Last week students prepared and presented a dialogue where they pretended to be an Italian student and an Australian student. They asked and responded in Italian about what they eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as discussing likes and dislikes. This week, both Year 9 Italian classes with Prof Cinini had the opportunity to prepare and make pizzas together. Their pizza consisted of Mutti sauce, mozzarella cheese and basil – the traditional Margherita pizza.
Well done to our Year 9 Italian students for their efforts and to Prof Cinini for engaging them in a culturally relevant activity.

ACC Boys Hockey
The Boys ACC Hockey team had a fantastic day at the Division 1 Hockey Challenge held on Monday, 23 June at Perth Hockey Stadium.
The team started the day strongly with a 2–0 win over Bunbury Grammar and continued their dominant form throughout the round games, defeating Sacred Heart 5–0 and Mazenod 1–0. These results secured them a place in the Grand Final, once again against Bunbury Grammar.
While carnival honours have been shared between the two schools in recent years, this time John XXIII proved too strong, taking out the final with an impressive 3–1 victory.
Congratulations to all players involved, and a special mention to the Year 12 students, Greg Briede, Jackson Bosnich, Ben Savage and Matt Gillman, for their leadership and commitment in their final ACC hockey appearance.

Western Force Cup
Our Years 9 to 10 Rugby team laced up their boots and took to the field for the Western Force Cup carnival – and what a day it was!
Our boys burst out of the gates in their opening match with a commanding 26–12 victory over Aranmore’s development side. The contest was fast and physical, but our lads brought the energy early, with some slick attacking play and rock-solid defence. For several of our players, it was their first-ever game of rugby, making the win all the more impressive. Confidence was high, and the team found a great rhythm.
Game two saw John XXIII face a formidable opponent in Aranmore’s premier Year 10 rugby team. The battle was hard-fought from start to finish, and while the scoreboard didn’t fall in our favour, our boys showed grit, heart, and some fierce tackling. Not only did they manage to cross the try line, but they also kept Aranmore’s attack in check, limiting their scoring opportunities and refusing to roll over.
With one win and one loss, everything came down to the final pool game against Shenton College. The equation was simple: win, and you’re through. And win they did. John XXIII came out firing and dominated early to secure a 17–5 victory, booking their spot out of the pool stage. Their performance was marked by strong teamwork, quick ball movement, and sheer determination.
Our team was expertly coached by experienced John XXIII rugby mentor and alumnus Christian 'Critter' Golding, with assistance from Mr Mitchell, whose support and sideline enthusiasm helped guide our team through the day.
The finals competition will take place next term, and our boys are already looking forward to continuing their training and honing their skills, with the hope of gracing the field once more in Week 4. With their spirits high and momentum building, this team is just getting started.
Thank you to Mr Mitchell for the great recount of the day.
