Embracing Chinese Culture

This year, the students studying Chinese have been developing their understanding of Chinese culture and enhancing their communication skills through a variety of engaging activities.

In Year 7, students have been introduced to the basics of Chinese, including the meaning and origins behind characters, the importance of pinyin and tones, and the simple rules behind Chinese sentences.

Alongside this, they have been exploring the tales and traditions behind the Spring Festival, allowing them to dive into the zodiac animals, the story of Nian, and important Chinese New Year customs.

One of these customs was dumpling making, which students had a chance to partake in with Mr Dempsey and our Year 7 Coordinator Mrs Smith.

Students had a chance to wrap, cook and eat their little creations, helping them put their Chinese cultural knowledge into practice.

Year 8 students have been expanding on their language skills, learning how to decode extended reading passages, conversations and complex sentences.   Alongside this, they have explored Chinese legends and cultural icons, which have provided a fascinating insight into the rich heritage of China.

Overall, our students from Year 7 to 8 have made impressive strides in their Chinese language journey.

They have demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication in their studies and have set the bar high for Semester 2. Jiayou!加油!

Year 10 History WWII

Our Year 10 students have concluded a successful semester of History, learning about World War II (Pacific and European Theatre of War).   A highlight of the course was a visit from Australian Army Veteran Nathan Allen.

Students were captivated by Nathan’s retelling of his experience of conflict in Afghanistan and could draw comparisons between Nathan’s service and that of the soldiers involved in battle in WWII.

I liked the photos and medals Nathan bought in that showed his journey in the Army” – Leroy, Brock, Jett – Year 10
