Grade Bulletin - Term Three, 2024

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:

Religious Education

K.4 Belonging to God’s People

This unit introduces the students to religious imagery, to the church building, its furnishings and to gestures used. The celebration of the Eucharist is introduced with a focus on key liturgical actions and objects used. 

 

K.5 God’s Great Family

This unit begins with the story of Abraham and Sarah. It is a story of promise and trust and is formative to our identity as the People of God. The second part of the unit introduces Jesus’ family and tells two short stories of Jesus as a boy. The story of the People of God begins a new chapter in the person of Jesus. This unit focuses on belonging both in the family and with all the People.

English

Reading Fluency and Reading Comprehension:

The children will continue to develop their fluency skills and strategies to read and comprehend decodable texts. Students will develop the ability to stop at the end of a sentence in response to a full stop and regulate their voice to respond to punctuation such as exclamation marks and question marks. Students will recall and recount events or characters from a text to express their understanding of the book and expand their vocabulary by clarifying unknown words. 

 

Creating Written Texts:

This term, the children will understand and respond to quality literature. The texts chosen for Term Three will focus on learning about context, perspective and the purpose and structure of a narrative. Students will respond to this literature by constructing simple and compound sentences. They will use their knowledge of letters, sounds and tricky words to express their ideas in writing. Students will focus on recording the initial, middle and final sounds of words phonetically with close approximations. The children will re-read their own writing and demonstrate an awareness of nouns, adjectives, conjunctions and pronouns. 

 

Spelling and Phonemic awareness:

The students will continue Phase 2 of the ‘Sound Waves Spelling’ Program. 

 

Oral Language and Communication: 

Students learn to listen for understanding, contribute to social and learning interactions, use correct tense when speaking and retell details of a story or event. Oral Language and Communication tasks are necessary for students to become successful readers and writers. The children will continue to present their special ‘NEWS’ to the class weekly.

Mathematics

The students will be explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus with a focus on using mathematical language, reasoning and understanding. Activities are differentiated to cater for all student needs and ability. 

 

In Term 3, the students will be:

  • Representing Whole Number 
    • Connecting counting and numerals to quantities 
  • Combining and Separating Quantities
    • Copying, continuing and creating patterns 
    • Combining quantities to make ten
    • Investigating, forming and recording equal groups by sharing 
  • Non-Spatial structure: Mass
    • Using mathematical language to describe and compare masses
  • 3D Spatial Structure: Volume
    • Comparing volumes by building, filling and packing
  • Geometric Measure: Length
    • Creating half a length
  • Non Spatial Structure  - Time
    • Telling the time on the hour on analog and digital clock

Science and Technology

This term, in the Earth and Space strand, students will learn about daily and seasonal changes in the environment. The children investigate how living things respond to these changes. They explore their immediate surroundings, the daily weather and ask questions about their observations and experiences.

History

This term, students will develop skills of historical inquiry and communication. They will learn about their history and that of their family, this may include stories from a range of cultures and other parts of the world. Students will recognise differences and similarities between individuals and families in the past and present.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

This Term, Kindergarten will participate in Physical Education (PE) lessons with Miss Reid and their classroom teacher. Students will be focusing on developing their knowledge of different games and sports. They will also be involved in an Olympic Game Class Challenge. Students will work on the skills they have learned in previous terms and apply them to different sports and games. Students will learn different rules and requirements for various sports. They will be working on their teamwork, communication and resilience skills. 

 

Students will participate in a K-2 Fun and Fitness Day on Friday, 2 August. Students participate in running races and a variety of games. 

 

This term, students will participate in the ‘Open Parachute’ program. They will learn to identify their likes and dislikes, how to persist with challenging tasks and the importance of trying new things. There will be a focus on the student's growth mindset. 

Creative Arts

Students will continue participating in the Amadeus Music Education program, introduced by Sydney Catholic Schools to our school this year. Students will participate in listening, performing and sound activities with Mr Parlato. Within these lessons, students will:

  • sing in unison and parts,
  • play tuned and untuned percussion instruments, and
  • play available instruments including percussion instruments.

In Visual Arts, the students will use a variety of media to create artwork including oil pastels, paint, watercolour and collage. Students will create Aboriginal Art using various techniques. The children will also reflect on and appreciate the works of other artists. The students will create artwork based on a shortlisted CBCA picture book and their final product will be displayed in the Library for Book Week in Week 5.  

Mandarin

Our students continue to participate in the Chinese language program called the Meg Language Program. The Meg Curriculum is written by the co-author of the Australian Curriculum. All students and teachers will participate in the digital learning platform via Zoom weekly sessions with educators in China.

Homework 

Kindergarten will begin Homework in Week 2. Homework will consist of daily reading, tricky words and counting work. Further information will be sent home at the beginning of Week 2.

Students are to wear their sports uniform on these days.

Each week, students will have the opportunity to borrow books from our school library. Please ensure your child brings their Library Bag to school .
