Statement

Auslan

(Michelle Rees)

In Term 1, students will be introduced to Auslan. They will learn how they can use their hands, bodies and facial expressions to communicate. We will begin to look into deaf culture and how and why people communicate using sign language. The topics we will cover this term include school signs, colours, family and Easter. We will also begin to look at fingerspelling. Each week we will learn how to fingerspell the letter students have been learning within their literacy program.  Every lesson will be very hands-on involving lots of games, songs and role-play. We will celebrate the school values of Kindness, Respect, Aspiration and Grit as we acknowledge our own achievements, as well as those of our peers.

Performing Arts

(Peter Humphreys)

In Term 1, students will explore various elements of drama and music. The focus for drama will include developing confidence through speaking and listening. We will use imagination to retell stories and foster empathy as we explore different characters' emotions. Our music components will include movement and exploring musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics, and pitch, allowing students to engage with music in a hands-on way. We will create connections between drama and music through sound stories that will encourage interdisciplinary learning and stimulate student creativity, while having fun and learning valuable teamwork and cooperation skills.

Visual Arts

(Amanda West)

Students will start Term 1 by reading the book ‘Let’s Play’ by Hervé Tullet, explore its interesting lines and primary colours and then create their own artwork in response. They will continue to learn about primary and secondary colours through various painting experiences. The art elements of line, shape and texture will be explored during printmaking and modelling activities. While making a clay snail, students will develop modelling skills such as rolling, sculpting and joining clay. Later in the term, they will be introduced to the artworks of Vincent Van Gogh and use these as inspiration for a printing activity. Students will have regular opportunities to share their artworks, as well as discuss and appreciate the art of their peers.

Physical Education (P.E)

(Chris Steele)

In Term 1, students will focus on exploring movement and physical activity. Participation will include minor games and activities to develop fundamental motor skills particularly catching, kicking and skipping. This will be explored through the use of body and space awareness with equipment such as hoops, beanbags, soft balls and ropes.
