Young Leaders Day Reflection

On Friday the 16th of February, the WPPS Grade Sixes attended the National Halogen Young Leaders Day at the Melbourne Convention Centre. On this day, we experienced four high profile Australians talk about their journey to becoming a leader. We started off the day by meeting up at REALM, Eastland and caught the Ringwood train to the city. When we arrived at Southern Cross Station, we had a nice walk to the Melbourne Convention Centre. We settled into our seats and learnt some fun dances from an amazing dancer called Dean. DJ Raff  hosted the event and made it super enjoyable for everyone.

The first speaker was Anastasia Woolmer, the first female Australian to become a champion in memory sports. She won it twice and she showed everyone her amazing memory skills. She showed us through her life that persisting enough will always make you improve.

The second speaker was Bryson Klein, world champion Ninja Warrior. He showed us the mindset that he needed to have to achieve his goals and how to face the challenges that came in his way. We got to watch footage of him and his team win the World Championship. He showed us that you should follow your dreams.

The next speaker was Jane Bunn, a Meteorologist and 7 News weather reporter. She showed us what it looks like behind the scenes on TV every night. We were surprised how quickly she could change her voice to a 'news reporting' voice and present herself as a totally different person! She told us that you don’t have to know what you want to do when you're older, and that we have time to decide and change our minds.

The last speaker was Melissa Barbieri, former Matilda’s Captain and goal keeper. She was our overall favourite speaker, as she told us how she persisted though the tough times when everyone told her only men could play soccer. She also shared how she pushed though when she was told to quit. She told us that other people cannot limit you.

The amazing day in the city was truly incredible and inspiring. We are so lucky that the WPPS Grade Sixes got to experience such an amazing day!
