Chris Evan with Jacob Sterio

Jacob Sterio has secured a school based electrical apprenticeship with Chuck E Electrical in Seymour. Jacob has just commenced Year 11 VCE VM which will allow him to attend the workplace two (2) days a week to experience life as an electrical apprentice and attend Seymour College the remaining three (3) days. With support from Careers Officer, Carol Fisher, Jacob contacted Chris Evans of Chuck E Electrical to enquire about some work placement which was agreed to by the employer. In the workplace, Jacob then demonstrated real enthusiasm and genuine interest in the electrical sector together with a real work ethic. As a result of the positive feedback, a conversation developed in relation to a possibility of Jacob commencing a school-based apprenticeship which Chris Evans fully supported. Jacob has nominated GO TAFE as his preferred trade school which will see him attend four weeks of training scattered throughout 2024.

What a fantastic result, Jacob.

Congratulations.

Sierra Raymond is a Year 10 student who completed work experience in September at Ultra Thoroughbreds which is located close to Kilmore. Sierra loved the environment so much and showed real potential within the industry, the employer was happy to have her worked casually during the Christmas holidays. Sierra really loves working with horses. Towards the end of 2023, Sierra instigated contact with Rick Hager, the School Based Apprentice Coordinator wanting to explore the option of a possible school-based traineeship which would allowed her to continue working at Ultra Thoroughbreds and gained valuable understanding of the equine industry. Ultra Thoroughbreds agreed to support Sierra in her wishes of registering into the Certificate III in Horse Breeding qualification. The training will be delivered by GO TAFE, a blend of both online and on-site delivery. Sierra will attend the workplace each Wednesday and attend school the remining four (4) days, with a plan to possibly transition to two (2) days per week at the workplace.

Good luck Sierra.

Darby O’Brien, who is studying Year 12 at Seymour College, has commenced a school-based carpentry apprenticeship with Cole Construction & Development who are based in Nagambie. In 2023, Darby completed the first year of his VET Building at Seymour College and wanted to transition this into a school-based apprenticeship in 2024. He contacted Jason Cole and arranged for a work placement with a view to securing a school-based apprenticeship. With his preparedness to tackle some difficult tasks, Darby demonstrated a great work ethic and displayed a genuine interest in the carpentry trade. Jason Cole recognised Darby’s potential and committed to employ him on a school-based apprenticeship commencing at the start of 2024. As part of his training, it has been agreed for Murray Mallee Training to provide this service to the workplace as is their practice.

Darby is excited and grateful for this opportunity and should be congratulated for his efforts.

Good Luck Darby.

Charlie Kelly has commenced an electrical school-based apprenticeship with Green Light Electrical, a local electrical business who are based in Avenel. This employer has a strong history of employing local students from Seymour College, with Charlie now being the third school-based employed in the past four years. The previous two students are now completing their apprenticeship with Green Light Electrical on a full-time basis. Charlie sourced the work placement with the employer by his own initiative. Whilst he had some previous work placement in other trades, Charlie really enjoyed his time working in the electrical sector. Green Light Electrical were prepared to offer Charlie an opportunity as a school-based apprentice. Charlie has now commenced working two days a week and has chosen to attend Kanagan Institute as part of his trade school.

Well done Charlie.

Seymour College Parents and Guardians

Please support our students with meaningful work experience placements during 2024.

Do you own a business or work for one where you feel students would benefit from learning industry knowledge and skills?

Would you be willing to introduce a young person from our community to the world of work?

During semester 1 2024, year 10 students are required to engage in a weeklong Work Experience placement.

In addition, our VCE VM students are required to engage in a one day a week Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placement for the duration of the semester.

We are seeking employers who are keen to share their knowledge and offer opportunities to students.

Please contact the Seymour College Careers Office either by email to Felicity Wilmot: felicity.wilmot@education.vic.gov.au or Carol Fisher: carol.fisher@education.vic.gov.au or phone: 5771 1359 if you can help.

Your support for Seymour College young people is very much appreciated.
