Library News
Welcome to the library!
A big welcome to the 2024 school year from the library to new and returning students. We hope everyone had an enjoyable summer break and found some time for reading!
VBC Library
The library is open before and after school, and during recess and lunchtime. The library closes to students for staff meetings on Mondays and Thursdays (8.40-8.55), and there may be changes to hours at other times due to meetings and events in the library. Study Hall (homework club) for Years 7-10 is held in the library after school on Thursdays (3.30-5).
Borrowing
The Library has an excellent fiction collection which is organised by genre. We also have a wide range of graphic fiction/manga, non-fiction and biographies. The collection is driven by students and we encourage students to recommend new titles and authors – they can see us at the library desk, message the library on Microsoft Teams (@vbclibrary) or add requests to our suggestions book.
Students can borrow up to 5 books at a time. Books are loaned for six weeks and can be renewed either at the library desk or online by signing into the Library webpage (Compass username and password). Students can also reserve books and check their borrowing history online.
Our non-fiction collection covers both curriculum areas and recreational reading. We also subscribe to a range of magazines (including Frankie, Cosmos and Australian Geographic) and The Age and Herald Sun newspapers.
Online Resources
The library provides students with access to online resources, which can be accessed using their Microsoft Sign-in (Viewbank College email and Compass password):
Gale OneFile ANZ - news, magazine and periodical articles.
Wheelers ePlatform - a wide selection of fiction audio and ebooks.
The library space
The library is available as a study and social space during recess and lunchtimes. The space includes a silent study room for VCE students, and a quiet reading zone.
There is a printer/photocopier in the library (sign in with Compass ID and password) – ask us if you need help.
Wellbeing, Engagement and Inclusion, Careers and the International School offices are all accessible from the library. The IT Help Desk is also located in the library during break times.
Activities
A range of board games, puzzles and drawing materials are available to borrow from the library desk for use at break times.
Get involved
We run a monthly Book Club which meets to discuss books and take part in initiatives to promote reading around the school.
We also run a library volunteer program where students can gain some work experience helping out at the library desk, or with shelving, displays or book processing.
We run regular competitions which are promoted around the library and on our Teams page.
