LITERACY

In Reading we have been continuing to read picture books and examining one book over the week. This has given students time to analyse and comprehend fully a text. The students have focused on making inferences based on text clues and looking at the themes of belonging. We have been loving discussing Jessica’s Box and understanding how she attempts to make friends in the text!

In Writing we have been focusing on narrative retells. The students planned and wrote narrative retells based on Little Red Riding Hood and The Gingerbread Man. The students have focused on writing their text using time order words, including the events in order. Grade 1 students are beginning to write 3-4 sentences and the Grade 2’s are concentrating on paragraphs and adding extra details.

NUMERACY

In Numeracy we have been learning to bundle tens using different materials such as beads, pompoms, match sticks, popsicle sticks and unifix blocks. The students have been practicing counting their bundles by tens and suggest the number that makes. For example, 7 tens makes 70 ones. The students have been able to work co-operatively in their new maths groups. They shared their answers, worked together to bundle and count, and tidied resources appropriately for their groups.

SEL/INQUIRY

In SEL, the students are practicing their Growth Mindset by changing the way they self- talk to themselves. This will help the students to grow their confidence and independence.

In Inquiry, the students have been continuing learning about the topic “Growing Older and Wiser”. The students created some interesting questions to interview an adult in the school about their responsibilities and how they have changed over their lives. Mr Hay has lived so many lives! The kids were so excited to receive his responses about his childhood to now!

Reminders:

The new school start time from this year is 8.35 am in the morning. We would like to encourage you to drop your child to school at 8.35 am daily so they can participate in their Morning Circle activities which is a crucial part of their day.

We also start an intensive Phonics group at 8:50 am which is invaluable to improve student’s literacy skills.
