Vinnies Youth Corner

During Term One, Year 9 HaSS classes explored the topic of food security. Drawing on the definition established at the 1996 World Food Summit, food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and preferences for an active and healthy life.

To connect this learning to a real-world context, Year 9 families were invited to donate non-perishable food items to support local families in need if they were able to. These donations were distributed through Kelmscott Vinnies. We extend our sincere thanks to all families who contributed to this initiative. The donations being promptly distributed to families who had recently sought assistance.

The Community Kitchen program has also continued to thrive, with strong student participation. It has been particularly encouraging to see older students mentoring younger participants, fostering both practical skills and a strong sense of community.

On average, approximately 60 people attend the Community Kitchen in Kelmscott each Wednesday evening, with around 10 individuals experiencing homelessness directly benefiting from the meals prepared by our students.

Community Kitchen sessions run fortnightly throughout the term. Students are encouraged to check daily notices for upcoming dates.

The final Vinnies Cooking Session for the term will be held in Week Nine on Wednesday, 1 April. All sessions take place after school from 3:10 pm to 4:30 pm in D Block.
