Year 12 Biology Excursion

As part of the Biotechnology unit, our Year 12 ATAR Biology students visited the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research on 18 March for an engaging, hands‑on learning experience.
The day began with an introduction to genetic mutations and the role of PCR in biotechnology, followed by a fun DNA amplification competition. Students then entered the teaching lab, where they were taken through Category Two laboratory rules, learnt how to run a PCR, and practised using micropipettes, key skills in modern biological research.
After lunch, students conducted gel electrophoresis to visualise their DNA samples. While waiting for results, they toured several active research laboratories, gaining valuable insight into real‑world medical research and the work of scientists at the institute.
The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with authentic laboratory practice and explore future pathways in science.
