Year 9 Seminar Social Media Talk

As part of the Year 9 Seminar program, students recently participated in an engaging and thought-provoking session led by Paris McNeil, focusing on the impact of social media and screen use on young people.

Throughout the session, students explored the implications of the proposed social media ban and what it may mean for them both now and in the future. This prompted rich and reflective discussion, with many students considering their own habits and the role social media plays in shaping their relationships, wellbeing, and identity.

A key element of the presentation centred on the psychology behind screen addiction. Students gained insight into how social media platforms are designed to capture attention and encourage prolonged use. This understanding allowed them to critically reflect on their own behaviours and recognise the challenges associated with managing screen time in an increasingly digital world.

Importantly, students also explored practical and effective strategies to develop healthier habits. These included setting boundaries around device use, creating screen-free routines, and being more mindful and intentional in their online interactions.

The session concluded on a positive and proactive note, with every student committing to a personal challenge to better manage or reduce their screen time.

This experience forms an important part of our Year 9 Seminar program and is supported by The Resilience Project and the Keeping Safe Child Protection Program, both of which aim to equip students with the skills to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
