F-4 Community News

Foundation

Foundation students have been busy doing lots of interesting learning and are enjoying being at school on Wednesdays now as well.

In mathematics we have been learning all about numbers and counting. We are counting forwards and backwards, comparing different groups and identifying which has more or less. We are beginning to write our numerals 0-9 with more confidence.

We have been playing 'Sit down Sunday' to help us remember the days of the week in order - see if you child can teach you how to play at home!

In Literacy we are enjoying our morning sentence activity, enjoying a 'word walk' around the school last week to search for any words we could find. Holding our pencil correctly has been a focus as we begin our handwriting tasks. Everyone enjoys listening to our story book and listening out for our focus words. Our 5 L's are helping us listen attentively as we learn about the characters for new letters as we introduce them.

In RE we have been learning about Lent and Easter and were excited to have a visit to the Church with our Year 12 buddies. We are looking forward to our first Liturgy with our year 12 buddies in the Church next week.

Congratulations to those students who have already read for 25 nights or more! It is exciting to move our named pegs up on the display chart to show home many nights we are reading at home. Don't forget to bring reader bags in every Monday for TAs to check our reading logs.

Our Foundation Stay Back was a great success with everyone having a fantastic time enjoying some tasty afternoon treats. A highlight was definitely playing on the playground - especially the bigger playground we don't usually get to use!

Years 1 and 2

Year 2 students have been busy building their literacy skills as they explore the long “e” sound and the different ways it can be spelled. Through reading, writing and word investigations, students have been practising how to recognise and apply these spellings in their own work.

In mathematics, students have been learning how to tell the time on an analogue clock, focusing on reading o'clock, quarter past, quarter to and half hours. They have also been exploring calendars and dates, helping them understand days, weeks and how we organise time in our everyday lives.

In our 4 RRRR's learning, students have also been engaging in lessons about Respectful Relationships, focusing on rights, resilience and kindness. We have been developing our emotional literacy by learning how to recognise and talk about our feelings, understand others’ emotions and build positive friendships. It has been wonderful to see students supporting one another and practising ways to be kind and respectful members of our classroom community.

Years 3 and 4

The past few weeks have been busy and exciting in Year 3. One of our biggest milestones was sitting our very first NAPLAN tests. Although there were a few nervous butterflies at the start, students showed wonderful persistence, determination and resilience. They approached the tests with focus and maturity, and their teachers were extremely proud of the effort everyone showed.

In literacy, we are close to finishing our class novel, Matilda by Roald Dahl. Mrs Corso has made each reading session entertaining with dramatic voices and fun storytelling. The famous Bruce Bogtrotter chocolate cake scene has definitely been a class favourite!

Inspired by the story, students wrote their own narrative pieces using vivid vocabulary and onomatopoeia such as bang, crash and whoosh.

In science, students explored how heat connects to different types of energy, while in maths they learned about time by building clocks and practising estimation through fun, active challenges. It has been a fantastic few weeks of learning in Year 3.

As part of our literature studies, the Year 4 students have been learning about deforestation and the impact that it has on the environment including erosion, floods, loss of habitats, pollution and climate change. We will use what we have learnt to write a persuasive text.

Year 4 students have been exploring food chains and ecosystems in science. They learned how plants and animals depend on one another for survival and how energy moves through a food chain. Through discussions and activities, students discovered the important roles of producers, consumers and predators within different ecosystems.
